But I also think they're grossly overrated. I wouldn't have traded my undergrad experience in Chicago for any of the others. None of these great schools can make you learn -- you do. They just get a lot of the public credit for that (those bastards!). And never underestimate how much you will learn outside of the classroom while in college -- I argue it's far more than you'll learn in the classrooms.

I agree completely on this part. Even in school related courses and projects people often use skills and knowledge they acquired on their own. It's more like creating a learning environment where you have to learn certain things but you're welcome to go way beyond that on your own. And you should. And you will if the field really interests you.

swag, that sounds impressive! What do you do nowadays?

About Actuary.

My friend is going to Waterloo in Canada to pursue that field. He is insanely bright, has no life, doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, you know, good guy. It's a job that suits him perfectly.

The job pays like hell. You become one, you are fixed and can become my friend if you like.

You need to be deligent though.

I want to pursue piloting. Helicopters and Planes, but mainly helicopters. I am qualifed right now to go and learn but my parents want me to get a degree in something just incase. Can anyone give me some advice as to what will be a good major in relation to piloting?

Oh, well, it's definitely not. ;)

Several years ago, I could have honestly told you I worked on control systems for high-energy physics accelerators -- and made myself sound like a complete turbo-geek.

But nowadays I can only say that I manage a team of software engineers for a dot-com survivor. But I have to confess, it works for me...

My cousin wanted to do piloting too, and I hear (at least here in Msia anyway) you need good grades in Physics for that.

Or maybe it's because I like physics so much that I think everything needs to have physics :D

nosubstitute, I did a test on the site you gave - just a personality test though :)

    my results :

If you are an Extravert, you prefer your energy to flow outwards, and your attention is naturally drawn to the outer world of action. Because you focus outwards, you tend to become talkative and you develop many different interests.

    Extraverts often think out loud.

Picture of Extravert: enjoying coffee with friends; testing ideas through discussion.

Analogy: rock skipping across a lake - touching many parts of the water, but none too deeply.

    Common Qualities of Extraverts:
    · Attracted to many different things
    · Like to talk, sometimes without thinking
    · Like to get involved, make it happen

Oh sorry......I thought it had a career asessment test. I probably ran into that a while back and I can't remember where it is. You'll probably find something if you search on google I assume. :)

If you guys want some career planning sites I'll give you three right here:
www.careerpathsonline.com/planning/default.htm (you gotta register for this one i think)
www.alis.gov.ab.ca/main.asp (this is a Canadian site from Alberta, but it still gives you good info)
www.careerkey.org (this one seems repetitive, but it's ok, and you need Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape 7.0 at least)

If you want more, PM me, because the Ontario government in Canada forces us to take a Careers course in high school, and I have a list that my teacher gave me.

I've got a question for Fliakis: How hard was it to get studying law in Lithuania?! And how is it in general, do you enjoy what you are doing?! Anyway, I'll probably at least try to get studying law, but it will take major effort from me so I'm not sure yet...

I'm actually considering that field. I'm also quite interested in meteorology as well, and I might be able to succesfully unite the two and work for an insurance company. Endless possibilities.......I hope.

Yup, I recently got accepted to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

It's most likely gonna be tough, but if you like it, you will have a good time.
