Del Neri: 'Juve starts with Marchisio'
Thursday 27 May, 2010
Juventus' new boss Gigi Del Neri has revealed how he expects Italy international midfielder Claudio Marchisio to be central to his side's future.
Interviewed in this morning's La Gazzetta dello Sport, Del Neri set out his vision for a new Juventus capable of getting back to winning ways.
When asked to describe what his Juventus will look like, Del Neri said: “Aggressive, applied, organised. My objective is to make the opponent worry about us again, the opposite mustn't exist; we have to be concrete, care for the particulars, attack and defend at the same time.
“Andrea Agnelli said three words to me, all of them the same: work, work, work. I have got to know a young man of great worth in the sense that he understands football. I have the impression that he chose me in person.
“You shouldn't expect a revolution. We will not throw out the baby with the bath water. This group has value. Juve scraped together 55 points last season, which is more than nothing. There will be changes and adjustments, not twists.
“For me, Buffon and Del Piero are two champions who we should focus on. They represent a legacy of class, experience and personality. One bad year can't cancel out Buffon and Del Piero.
“Del Piero is the charismatic captain of Juventus. For the future, I am thinking to Marchisio, an important element, a central midfielder who plays inside not outside. He is young, has a good temperament. I like him.”
When asked about Diego and Felipe Melo, Del Neri said: “I am not the kind of Coach who adapts his team to one player. It's the individual who should adapt himself to the group. My football is founded on socialism and meritocracy.
“As for Melo, we are talking about a Brazil international. We'll see what happens. I'll say this: Juventus have valuable players, we mustn't scatter them away.”
