I think it's becoming fairly obvious that on being hired, Marotta himself must've seen what disarray the club and board are in. So in addition to the long list of players he'd have to start sourcing he obviously thought it best to start with a 'safety first' approach in the coaching department, seeing his relationship with Del Neri. Maybe the brief he has been given first up, is to have the team playing Champions League football again, before aiming for the scudetto. As much as I think Beppe to be a good appointment, I can't believe some of us here are settling for a decision like this as far as the coach is concerned. The move has 'deja vu' written all over it.
It's not going to be any better than Ranieri or Zach's time here. These people are not the kind who can control a dressing room of people used to winning. They need to be disciplined and their talent harnessed by commanding respect. Lippi, Hiddink, Capello, Ancelotti maybe tactically better or worse than a Del Neri or Zac, but they know how to earn the respect of their players and get the best of out them. And make them perform as a unit. Clearly Del Neri's too conditioned to having mid-table ambitions to inspire a Del Piero, Buffon, Chiellini or Diego on the pitch. We dont need a tactically superior coach. We need somebody who will crack the whip and allow players to understand their responsibility towards this shirt.
Based on his 25 years of experiencing more lows than highs at most clubs he's been at, Del Neri seems like he'd settle for the draw because over the years, his primary instinct has been to 'avoid' defeat and not go for the win. That's not what these guys need to learn right now.
I dont buy the nobody else is available argument at all. Mourinho has a contract with Inter that runs for a year or two more, but Madrid have managed to pocket him? They haven't won anything in a couple of years but they've still managed to get their man. Sure, they have a star studded line up as bait. But we're Juventus, we may not match them on paper, but our aspirations are never much different. The reason they've got their guy is not only the money, it's their single minded approach. We offered Benitez good money too, but we didnt stick at it, till we got him. Not debating whether he was the man for the job, only questioning the policies that are undoing the club gradually. Like i said earlier, from Hiddink to Zaccheroni, from Benitez to Prandelli to Del Neri? What kind of precedent are we setting up here? One of confusion, instability and more abject failure.
The world cup is over in July. Think of the coaches who could be available. I think, with the bigger picture in mind, it would be a much smaller price to pay to lose one 'precious' month to gel a team of newbies together and prepare to avoid embarrassment in Europa preliminaries than having an average coach take over the reins of the club for another two years. As for those available, for my money, (and Juve's) anyone of Benitiez (dont be surprised to see him at Inter), Prandelli (he may have sworn himself to Fiorentina, but that means nothing, remember Capello's switch from Roma to Juve? You just need certain assurances, which our incapable board in the past hasn't even clear about giving) Gasperini, Gentile, Pellegrini would clearly be more suitable alternatives to this current appointment.
I'm sorry, I'm not as optimistic as some of us here, as much as I love Juve, but we can't fool ourselves anymore. This club is setting itself up for some serious down time. The only silver lining I can see is, our immediate competition, Milan and Roma, aren't healthy enough to significantly widen the gap with us. Although Inter sure are.
I mean common guys, who are we fooling? Look at that guy celebrating fourth place!? Mourinho or Van Gaal won't celebrate so much if either of them won the treble. Let alone a Scudetto or Bundesliga title.
Please god, let there be light at the end of this four year tunnel. Forza Juve.
