You don't know what a livecd is? What are you, some kind of noob? :p

A livecd is an operating system on a cd, you just insert it and boot from it and you have a full working system without touching the harddrive. I would expect someone to immediately suggest this to your question (whether or not it helps), but since they all seem to be away, I felt compelled to fill in :wink:

Well boys, I have a 400-level Meteo course now in Linux, Fortran and some other languages. As a novice in Linux, I'm scratching my head with some of this stuff. So I think I'm going to buy Linux for Dummies and be working quite hard for this class.

My C++ course looks like a cakewalk compared to this stuff. We're actually going to analyze some data for our National Weather Service. :scared:

If nothing else, it's good to see something other than just Windows, there is a world out there.

Hope your linux experience will turn out to be a positive one. It's not really so hard, it's just new to you.

Hopefully it will, because I need to be able to be proficient in some languages at least. The problem is I have no idea what the commands are and how things fit together at this point, but it was the first day. We already crashed into it ourselves first day and followed along with what the professor was doing, and I understood part of it.

What do you guys think is the best way to learn this stuff?

No worries, with Linux you get the most help by asking and we are all willing to answer.

Unless one works with programming or lots of data, I doubt using Linux would be necessarily. Since I have to learn this stuff for a grade, turn me into a Linux man, Martin.

Little did I know four years ago when I joked about Linux I'd have to use it myself.
