I don't know about the price issues but, I think all the ATI cards that came out with the Nvidia 8xxx were better and cheaper than all of their cards except for the 8800 GTX 768mb ram. And 9900 is a big waste of money. It doesn't add that much stuff either, a big disappointment. Even the media stopped talking about it.

If you ever plan on buying a card in the next 4-5 months, get the 8800GTX, it'll be cheaper and you won't regret it. Or if you have SLI motherboard, then put them in together, and you have a beast of a computer :)

If only you had quadcore...But I don't know if Linux even supports what I just said as I know nothing about the OS :D

well, i plan on buying teh GPU almost immediately, cos Intel doesnt seem to be doing anything regarding the resolution issue. the 8800 is amost $200 which a bit too much IMO. i think ill get the 8600, maybe not manufactured by nVidia, but XFX or some other company.

do u know the specific issues with 8600?

Well, I can't tell you the actual details as I never owned one before however I was reading some reviews on it and there were complaining that the colours were not as good as they were expecting, card idles in the mid 50c and a few screen flickering. Anti-aliasing will save your ass supposedly and that's about it.

If you plan on playing Crisis or all these other DX10 games coming out, good luck.

Hang on, DirectX10 is the new crap that only high end hardware supports and no software uses, right? In that case I'd be very skeptical to wine having support for it already, it's pretty new. Up to dx9 though I think you're pretty well covered.

It is stable but the service packs hardly make any difference. Then again XP is an operating system that has been in the market for the past 6 fucking years, the least it can be is become stable.
