i once installed dapper version for edgy....worked perfectly!

I figured it should work as well but it didn't.

As for the desktop effects, you mean compiz? First tell me how to enable it.

well, i checked out Live CD on my freinds comp....System>Preferences>Desktop Effects.

it'll ask if u want to enable drivers, and ity'll start downloading from the net!

strangely, internet didnt work outta the box in Live mode!

I'm on Kubuntu and I've searched everywhere for that option and I can't find it.

I'm on Feisty and I didn't find Compiz either and actually I am happy I didn't.

I haven't noticed anything in my short time with it. I'm now on Ubuntu and it's safe to say this version gets a lot more attention than Kubuntu.

The major thing I noticed is better responsiveness.
The batter icon has changed and the appearance of system guard as well.
