In case I have 1 gb ram and assigned big space for swap.Will it slow down performances? Maybe because they placed too much stuffs on swap instead of memory?

No, the only thing that will degrade performance is using more memory than you have. The kernel is very smart about minimizing swap usage and to the extent that you don't overload your system too much, you'll never notice a problem. Having more swap doesn't mean more will be used either. Besides, it's not using the swap at all that's a problem, it's transferring data between swap and memory. The kernel may put some stuff in swap and that's okay. The crucial thing is that what you need in a given moment doesn't come out of the swap.

I realize that's not a very good description, but it's a bit complicated the way this works. Basically you can just keep an eye on this with free.

monitoring using free it seems the kernel only uses very small portion of the available swap space. too much swap won't kill I guess.
Sometimes I don't understand why I keep whinning about performances even when I don't experience slowdown. maybe it's my old habit cause I used to have a very old computer where every single clock or byte counts.

Actually yes, I'm doing the same. Installed the kde desktop. That said, when Feisty is released, I'm thinking of just installing Kubuntu right off the bat. Since I'm going to be using KDE anyway, something about using Ubuntu and installing KDE on top of that makes me feel like it's a little... patchy :undecide:

Nothing wrong with running the ubu with KDE power. People get very religious about Gnome/KDE, gtk/qt etc, I mix them freely

i installed Ubuntu on my friends comp a few weeks ago. though we had some problems with the Xserver, we got it resolved. he was initially not interested in linux after a nightmare with Red Hat, but after he saw it at my place he liked it a lot!

I use a program for Warcraft 3 named WC3banlist, which is used to ban players who leave in the middle of games, use hacks and do other things that would make you not want to play with them again.. It's freeware, but unfortunately there's no Linux version.

Here's an excerpt from a thread on the program's forums:
