Is this kind of like saying "try cutting off one of your thumbs; you'll appreciate the other one more"?
No, you sick man with abnormal thoughts. :D

Gentoo is the greatest swiss army knife in the distro world, you can do just about anything with it (and people are, too). It is one size fits all. Ubuntu is in a sense the opposite. It isn't a flexible piece of material that you can twist any way you want, in fact replicating some easy things in gentoo becomes a real pain in ubuntu. But what you get instead, is a "parameterized" or "instantiated" gentoo, with most of the possible choices already made for you. And this, as witnessed by ubuntu's popularity, turns out to be a very successful set of choices for most users. This is precisely where so many of the other desktop distro's haven't done an equally good job. So all this work of integrating and streamlining applications, which is considerable, makes the package a very useful one to the users. And this polish and attention to detail is what separates ubuntu from the others, and when you compare it to gentoo, you will very clearly see why these choices that were made for you allow you to remain ignorant about lots of things you have no need of knowing. Just like noone except kernel developers (roughly) need to know how exactly the kernel works. Of course, knowledge never hurts, but being able to not know a lot of things, is a great advantage.

no no, that was a legitimate question. I'm not quite sure what they mean by 'flat pannel'. Even if it does indeed refer to 'flat panel', I'm not sure what that implies...
