don't try vista unless you're really curious what it's like. almost everyone who tried it removed it after a day or two, it's still unusable, no drivers, etc. it's only to satisfy your curiousity.

btw, i'm on mandriva right know, it's pretty good. as far as plug and play goes it's even better than ubuntu, it even recognized my printer, all hardware detected flawlessly. even mp3's, movies, all multimedia files play without installing anything. out of the box on a new level.

Well it wasn't for me, it was for my younger sister, but if its thats the case then ill just abort the plan..


So Mandriva is not childish? NO better than Ubuntu?? I have the ISO's somewhere around here, but I am not really excited about it...I still think its childish:p (this last sentence is for you Jeeks;))

it's not childish, it's kde, it's the same as kubuntu only with a default orange theme. :p

i don't know for you but for me, i am really pleasently surprised. a summary:
ubuntu: - didn't install printer automatically
- didn't install nvidia drivers automatically
- didn't install multimedia codecs automatically
- wouldn't play dvd's automatically

all of that mandriva did for me out of the box. thankfully ubuntu has automatix but it's really nice to be able to play multimedia out of the box. perhaps mandriva is better cause it's newer, i am running mandriva one 2007 which was released few days ago.

now to only figure out how to enable repositories....

All of this is because Ubuntu's strict policy of packing only free and open-source...

As for my printer, it did not install automatically, but "add printer" and choosing the model did it for me...which isn't all that bad...and certainly better than Windows where I have to download the driver (150 mb):confused:

suse was the first linux i tried, 10.0, it is good but i found yast not too good. maybe it was too much for a complete newbie at the time but i remember having tons of conflicting dependencies which i didn't know how to resolve.

ah yes, that's right. but as i said automatix took care of all that, and yes, add printer was enough for me too.

Suse was my first distro like a year ago....and since it was the first, I had a very hard time doing anything...It is good, but not really fond of it, IT WAS HELL!!!

yeah out of all the distros i tried suse was the most appealing graphically. i liked that lizard wallpaper as well. :D
though i REALLY didn't like yast.

vlatko, does your Skype work on Mandriva? Do you have a functioning webcam?

I might install it on my Dell if it is that advanced, afterall I wanted a childish distro :p

There's nothing unsafe about dualbooting. The only risks is wiping out your disk when installing it in the first place, so you have to be a little careful about that.

Yep, that's very handy. The only downside is that it's a bit slow, cause it loads everything from the cd.

Are you talking about running it on the old computer or a more modern one? Cause dsl and puppy are meant for old, slow systems, they look a bit dated. The ubuntu livecd is a state of the art linux.
