It kinda depends what you want to do with it. Windows is an average user OS, it's easy, simple, lets you run the applications/games you want, you may be wasting some resources, and have huge gaps in security and one occasional blue screen when you screw up, but that's it.

Linux on the other hand is more flexible, more stable (though i've heard horror stories from Red Hat crashes that make a blue screen seem insignificant), more secure (again, that may depend, if most hackers were devoted to ruining linux they could and would succeed). The whole application variety thing I won't get into (there's another thread for that), but DirectX and tasty 3D game graphics is one reason why my main OS still is Windoze.

You can think of this whole thing as a car. On one hand there's the factory-new car probably with faults in the breaks, motor etc, that'll blow up in your face and require some downtime in repair. On the other hand there's a trusty car, and lots of part that you can add, or fine-tune if you had the time.

If you don't have time, and don't need it, you won't use it: That's my take on Linux. I use because of school, but i really don't like to get too much into it.

Some of the newer Linux releases (Ubuntu's) are more average-user-friendly than -say- SuSE or Fedora or Debian, but I don't think that Linux will take that niche that Windows has carved for itself.

Thanks for the explaination, its much appreciated. I picked Rami's brains about the subject & im willing to give linux a shot.

Windows has 90-95% of the destkop market, I wouldn't exactly call that a niche :D

5.04 is a bit old, we are all awaiting 6.10 right now...try to get dapper (6.06), maybe that would solve your problem.

Ok guys, since I already see that this thread has turned into a troubleshoot thread, here is my problem.

I have a 250 GB hard-disk, with Ubuntu Dapper on one partition (Ext3) and another empty partition (Fat32). I want to put Windows on the other partition. However, when I pop in XP's cd (yes bootlegged:D), my pc does not boot from the cd, it automatically goes into grub.

So how could I make my system notice the Windows XP cd and boot from it? Note that I don't care about the current Ubuntu installation, as it is a fresh install, Ill just reinstall it after Windows to dual boot.

Sounds like someone needs to check their bios settings :)

Thats what I thought, so I tried two different XP CDs....I can't find the genuine cd, I am sure it was some where under the bed:D

Edit: So what I understand from both of you that I shouldn't have this problem. And that this is just perhaps an anomaly? I guess Ill try to find me a genuine XP cd and try it out...maybe that will solve it?

If your bios boots from CD first and the cd isn't bootable, it should give some kind of error I think. You can try disabling hd boot altogether. :D

I thought of doing that:D

But my bios didn't accept. It was like you cannot disable a detected media, but I could move it all the way down in the boot sequence.

But no, I don't get an error, I get the grub menu directly.

your best bet is to try with a genuine if you can find one. than if that doesn't work mess with the bios. on my old pc, boot priorities didn't work at all, i had to disable all boot drives except for the cd in order for it too boot a cd. try that out.

Try pulling out the IDE cable from the hd ;)

hmm yesterday I got no errors.

Now I am getting "Selected boot device not available - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

Guess an original CD is due now:S

Edit: Too lazy to get off my ass, Ill just burn Vista Beta on a DVD and give it a shot:D
