So that other I need an XP pc to test out Joost, so I went to use my lil 10 year old bro PC. A brand new dell (well almost 9 month old). So I log in XP, needed to log on Gmail to access the Joost link, so I fire up IE. And guess what? The website viewing area is eclipsed by a huge amout of those pesky little bars, sweetIM, alexia...etc you know the works. Literally 75% of the IE is bars, and the viewing area is just about 10 cm below the screen. Of course I was ultimately annoyed if not insulted. I also discovered that he installed like 60 games, all of which are trials which of course loaded his system with spyware and adware. I DECIDED TO PUT MY FOOT DOWN!!

I got my fav CD-ROM, Ubuntu Feisty, pop it in and reboot. Installed Ubuntu on an 80 gig partition. Got a problem with wireless, but nothing that Ubuntu forums wouldn't solve. Then I downloaded automatix, installed the essentials, codecs, flash and Java. Opened up Adept (or is it Synaptics?) installed like 30-40 FOSS games. Then finally to get the ooos and aaahs from that little critter, I installed Beryl and gave Ubuntu a minor facelift with a newer background and an Emerald theme.

Then I got that little mofo and sat him on the PC, and told him look dude all that crap you are installing off the net is gonna get you viruses and ruin your PC. I got you a better operating system that doesn't get any viruses. It's basically the same, and you don't have to pay for games over here. Try it out, you will like it. He was instantly amazed with Beryl. But I thought that would wear off after a couple of hours.

So I leave him like that for 2 or 3 days. Then I walked into the PC room and saw him on the PC, so I was like "on XP are we." Lol he sounded almost insulted, "No I am not, I am on Linux." I asked him if he liked it? He said yes Windows is very slow, I can't do anything over there, this one is fassssssst. I was like what else? he said everything is better even the MSN messenger! I asked him even games? He said yes (well considering he is used to cheap games downloaded off the net)!!!!!

User friendly my ass!!

A big :toast: to my lil bro, Hamza :pint:
Great story! ;)

Postin but yet away on MSN, you dirty RAT bastard....

:D
The Internet is full of pesky people, we need to keep them away;) (ur not one, in case you are wondering)

Ok so here is another Open Source story. I received some artwork from our creative agency. The files were in Adobe Illustrator (AI) format. I popped it in my XP laptop and it doesn't open, cuz I don't have Adobe Illustrator. So I take the CD to our in-house creative department and ask him to open it for me. He was like sure, but why don't you ask the IT to install Adobe for you? I was like naaa, I don't really need it, besides it's pretty heavy and would hog my system, I'll find another way to open it in the future (obviously thinking of an open source alternative). The guy from creative told me thats impossible, the only programs that could open AI files are Adobe itself and Corel. And he was like if there is another program I would've known about it. So I said "no way, I am sure there is a way without paying a ridiculous amount of money". So the bastard dared me to find a way.

So I go back to my workstation, fire up Google, and search for "Open Adobe Illustrator open source" or something like that. I found a program recommended on one forum, downloaded the win32 version. Lo and behold, it opens!!

So I called up the guy and told him to come to me, double clicked on the file and opened it in front of him. His face expression was priceless!! then I told him, "Blu-Ray and DVD HD are already cracked, a file format that has been around for more than 20 years would most certainly be reverse engineered"!!

Good story :D

Btw why not tell the rat bastard to give you the files in a format you can open easily, like EPS, SVG or something. I bet Illustrator can "export" to these.

I don't really care, I am a brand manager, they do the artwork and I check the mock-ups and printouts only for me to find 100 mistakes and throw it back in their faces :D...even these CD's that I tried to initially open, they were supposed to go to our in-house creative, do some re-touches and email me the jpegs :)
