I came across an interesting quirk today, never seen it before.

# mount
# df
df: cannot read table of mounted file systems: No such file or directory
# cat /etc/mtab
#

erm.... someone evil deleted my mount information? :D

I was gonna try out my complimentary OpenSolaris cd that just came in the mail today so I started vmware and shortly after I tried mount for the first time, getting no output :confused2

Thanks for your concern :p Turns out there's some glitch in the kernel, preventing me from booting at all, very odd. So I reverted back to 2.6.18.

You can download it, but they also had a ship it-like offer to send you free cds, I don't have the url anymore, but the offer probably still stands.

Huh, it's right on the frontpage: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/
Right column.

Is it worth a shot?? I never seen a Solaris system let alone worked on it. What advantages over Linux??
Probably none. Other than curiosity. Solaris is a flagship product that Sun sold for well probably a decade with servers and workstations. A couple of years ago they made it open source. I'm not saying it's fantastic, but it's variety for the distro hoppers among us. I wasn't able to boot the livecd in vmware, so I don't know what it's like. The last Solaris I tried was version 10 a couple of years ago.

How is it different? No linux kernel. That's the main difference.

Think of it as kind of Windows... that was open sourced. :D With all the nifty gnu stuff that is :)

That being the case can you mail me a copy?

Well by the time the mail reaches you you would have been able to download the iso in only a few hours, right? Besides, if you want it shipped, why not order from opensuse? Why bother with me as middle man?

its like linux and mac had a kid, that resembled mac mostly
no, not really. it's like unix were the parents and had kids. the cool kid that has all the skills is linux, the kid that everyone really likes to be around, but soon realizes has little to offer besides a smile, is mac. solaris is the parent, windows is the weird uncle
