Bes, on the top panel try Applications > Add/Remove.. (software)

It's golden. Not only does it have all the software ubuntu officially supports, but also all the goodies like evil mp3/dvd playback codecs and just about everything there is.

I installed Ubuntu Edgy on the family pc (I'm back in Norway for a few days) and the only thing I had to install from outside the configured repositories was skype. Everything else was already included. Fantastic. Fedora, Suse et al: pay attention, this is the way to do it.

OP
/usr/bin

/usr/bin

Excellent

Yes, but automatix is baaaaadness, causes tons of dependency crap along the line. It's waay better to use officially supported repos. Automatix is a bad hack that used to be necessary.

No, what I'm saying is, that is there any click-'n'-run method to install these codecs, like in the ubuntu add/remove menu? cuz I don't think there is..

Sort of. xine-totem and ffmpeg have tons of codecs that include dvd/mp3 and so on, and you just point and click to install them. For mplayer in particular though, I'm not sure how well integrated it is, so I downloaded the codec pack from the website manually. That adds support for windows media video and that kind of crap, but mp3/mpeg/dvd already worked before that.

Automatix is pretty much redundant now, at least much of what it offers.

a package called w32 codecs or summat.. automatix automatically downloads the latest one for you and installs it, etc..

I can stand to install one package manually as long as it doesn't interfere with the rest of the system. I'd rather do that and have a manual dependency than have mplayer depend on a package that isn't officially supported and may go away/server my die and then I'm screwed.

The mistake a lot of people making in installing software is thinking short term.

Yep, go here, scroll down to "Binary codec packages" and (on 99% of computers) download the Linux x86 20061022 package, unpack it into /usr/lib/win32 and you're all set :D

so how do i go on about installing the printer? samsung ml 1210
Well you are on Ubuntu (I am on Kubuntu), so I don't really remember the exact path...but somewhere in the system settings there should be printers. Over there you should find some kind of an add printer function...Ill start with that, if it doesnt work you might need some configuration...
