I've been very lucky when it comes to my computer hardware. Till now, I've suffered a few failed DVD drives, couple of burnt out PSU's(due to a faulty UPS) and a hard drive failure, which I don't think is too bad, considering it didn't cost me much to get em repaired\replaced.
By replaced you mean "switch it with a harddrive at work"? :D

I wanted to download Peppermint Ice. Instead I ended up downloading Peppermint One. About halfway done. So I guess I'll try it instead.

Okay, on Peppermint OS One right now. Not bad. Installed Opera first thing. The font looks funny and the cursors on the OS is weird. Overall no where as polished as Ubuntu or Mint. But this thing is fast. Very fast. I like it.

Give Mint a try, it's Ubuntu basically but with some slight changes.
i loved Mint but there was a problem with the screen size, but due to the size of the screen it would flicker every time i tried to apply new settings, same thing with update manager

gave up and went back to Ubuntu

Not just eye-candy. Like in Ubuntu 10.04, they integrated social networking a little, seeing as how people use it quite a lot these days. Little things that add to an OS's appeal.
Meh, if you ask me, all those new features and stuff are pretty much useless. But I'm not one who uses those things often though, so I can't judge really. To me the last useful thing in OS development came with multitasking. :D
