Kids suspended for wearing American clothing in America?! (6 Viewers)

The Mexican students were carrying and posting Mexican flags all around campus that day so supposedly the school was attempting to prevent possible fights. I don't know who these entitled Mexican students think they are, we're in fucking America, you can't expect citizens to be afraid to show their flag in their own country. I think maybe the school was trying to be extra sensitive to latinos after the whole Arizona mess.

The only brightside of this is how much media exposure it is getting. No school in the state would ever try something like this again. Supposedly scores of kids across California are now wearing American flag shirts to school in protest of this.

It's the school's fault then, being extra sensitive to any side would only make the situation worse and fighting more likely. But still, it's obvious that those students did in fact wear those shirts to provoke their fellow Mexican-decent students.

Anyway they got into the papers and even reached across the Atlantic, so good job

Probably. In places like that there's huge amounts of anamocity between the two major ethnic groups. The recent immigrants usually group together in tight knit isolation. Usually a few generations later they begin to assymilate into the culture. Very similar things happened in NYC after the immigration boom of the 1950s.

That's BS Kyle. Mexicans have far less rights than you do in California or anywhere for that matter. Go ask one of the fellows picking fruits and veggies how many rights he has. Sure there are way too many latin americans gaining illegal access into the US right now, but that has no bearing on what types of human or labor rights they have. (as a non-citizen they have practically none)

As for the incident, kids get sent home all the time in America for wearing clothes that "could be offensive". Sometimes it's justified sometimes it isn't. The VP said she thought she was looking out for the interest of student body. She made a mistake in my opinion. But people want to make a mountain out of this mole hill in light to Arizona's recent blunder.

But this isn't a case of "affirmative action" it's far from it. The kids that were sent home were of Mexican origin. We really need to sit back as a country and take a look at the situation before going off and screaming all this white entitlement nonsense. Immigration really needs reformed though. As of right now there are two options for working in the US, entering legally or illegally. With that said, deportation and the building of walls isn't really going to be much of a game changer.

The government needs to work with the private sector (especially corporations in the food production industry) and the Mexican government in order to come up with some sort of work-share program that gives those who wish to work in the US more options than just sneaking in. Perhaps some sort of a work permit in which people can come and go (along the border), in addition to seasonal and rotative work permits for pickers and meat packers. And then tax the workers of course.

This would piss of the USA all white = USA alright activists, but let's be honest here white folks aren't interested in picking tomatoes or spraying pesticides.

I agree with a lot of what you have said. It is impossible to keep the illegals out or to deport them in mass so the next best step is to create an efficient and fair way for them to come work here legally and pay their taxes. I like the seasonal idea as well, but the federal government needs to reform immigration laws. A lot of people don't realize it but the Obama administration must share some of the blame for the Arizona situation for not doing anything to reform immigration.

California needs to come down harsher on employers of the illegal immigrants. The one bit of that Arizona legislation I agree with was heavy fines and punishment for those that knowingly hire illegals. The laws should also be changed to end anchor babies as well.

Why wear them at all is the real question. What is this need people feel to advertise to others which country they live in? I could sooner see the point of it if you were abroad.

Of course there isn't any need for it but it shouldn't be getting them in trouble now should it? Whether you agree with their actions or not they should have the right to wear the shirts to school on any day.

Well said except that last bit. How can you know the students motives for wearing their shirts? Why do they have to be provoking and not just showing support for the country they are living in? Those two do not have to go hand in hand.

What I was gonna say is yet again there's this "outrage" about some pretty trivial thing (yes they were wrong), while people have become so used to serious abuses it doesn't make an impression on them anymore. Everyday on reddit there's stories about war, police brutality, crooked cops getting away with stuff, people getting killed etc and all that stuff just passes over. Then comes the story about the kid in school who got sent home for wearing the wrong t-shirt and it's zomg what is the world coming to.

But this is a different situation. Most of the latinos are second or third generation immigrants who grew up in the states. Many of them have gone to the same schools as these white kids and are not fresh off the boat immigrants just grouping together to avoid the Majority.

There isn't a huge amount of racial tensions between Latinos and Whites in California (except in the very low income areas where there is tension between all of the races), its there but it could be far worse.

I don't know their motives but by looking at this from a neutral view, why the hell would 5 American students decide all of sudden to wear these shirts, hats,...etc. In the only day, of the 365 in a year, that is looked at as the only day for the Mexican-Americans to show their Mexican heritage just as the Irish, German and Chinese do in their respective St.Patrick, Oktoberfest and Chinese new year festivals.

It's clearly a provocative act by those five but I stick by my previous point, the school is the one to be blamed for coming out with these ridiculous laws that is IMO come out begging for these issues to come out.

I'm not "Zomging" over this nor am I trying to claim that this is a huge pressing issue and I didn't think posting an article in the hangout thread here was equivalent to making any such claims.

Immigration has been a hot topic in the States recently so I was eager to discuss, nothing more. I don't expect you to get outraged over it.

The problem in California is the companies that knowingly hire are major corporations that donate millions to both parties. Like Monsanto, Del Monte, etc.

When I lived in Houston (elementary school) we celebrated Cinco de Mayo like any other marginal holiday pretty much because of the high Mexican population. But nobody made a big deal out of it. The media are just looking for a story to blow up. If it weren't for Arizona, then we wouldn't have heard about this. It would be merely local news.

Anytime there is any incident with slight racial ovetones in California we hear about it endlessly. There really isn't near as much racial animosity between whites and Latinos as the media would have you believe.

Totally disagree. I think wearing the flag like it's some kind of religion is weird and slightly creepy, but on that very day it actually makes a certain amount of sense, by giving people the chance to show others their "colors" on an occasion where everyone is doing it.

And I'm saying thats crap. Wearing the T shirts was not a direct insult to the Mexicans in any way, they had no reason to be offended and wouldn't have been had the VP just kept quiet . The fact that this made headlines is what is going to now cause tension any time a similar incident occurs.

This incident making the news is going to cause the tension that it was supposedly covering.
