Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip
If an offence involves contact it is penalised by a direct free kick or penalty kick.

a foul has to be careless, reckless or using excessive force. it was neither. it was accidental and unintentional. nice professional dive by lautaro though.

Incidental at best, and he very clearly didn’t step on his foot and do anything that should have caused any impediment at all to Alastair. His boot didn’t come down on top of Lautaro’s it came down against the back of it.

Call it a penalty if you want, but reckless or clear, it was anything but. Soft as charmin.
