Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip
If an offence involves contact it is penalised by a direct free kick or penalty kick.

a foul has to be careless, reckless or using excessive force. it was neither. it was accidental and unintentional. nice professional dive by lautaro though.
Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed

He obviously acts without precaution so it's a fault.

Also by unintentionally clipping lautaro de ligt is to blame for play interference, since he stops lautaro to press Benta?, so that's another motive to award a penalty.

Good half, if we played like this all season we wouldn't be in this position.

I thought Rabiot was excellent. Danilo good too.

Bentancur and Alex Sandro have been really poor. Kulu has been mixed, the goal comes from his movement but he is a red waiting to happen. Bentancur too probably.

Nonsense penalty against De Ligt. Martinez isn't getting the ball and he throws himself to the ground as soon as he realises that.

The thing is that we’re playing like we should have played more often. We’re aiming for counters, just like we should because we got speed. I don’t know why we tried to play modern, sexy football just for the sake of it while not even having players for it.

We’re definitely at our best when opponent is attacking as well.

He didn't interfere, lautaro had no chance of getting to the ball
