There was no intent, he was protecting himself from the ball hitting his face. It's of course up to the referee's interpretation but i wouldn't call it.

intent is not necessary if the ball is heading gol-wards

Only if the referee decides it is, if there's no intent it comes down to his interpretation. The majority of referees won't give fouls nor penalties in situations like that.
