I can't help but feeling that if MArchisio was playing he would have followed Ronaldo into the box on their goal and intercepted that. Pirlo just stood there and let Ronaldo run into the box unmarked.

This is a 100% fact. It's a certainty. This is what Pirlo gets away with almost his whole career. He does not even enter the picture so he escapes blame for so long. Even if Marchisio is there and tracks the run perfectly and Ronaldo beats him, people would still blame Marchisio for not marking tight enough. Whereas Pirlo is not even on the screen so people assume it is someone else's fault.

Then you see James hit the bar with his header. But why did he miss? Because fucking Sturaro busted his ass to put in a challenge and it disrupted the header. Sturaro is not a CB, not even a DM in this game so he could have took the Pirlo route and let someone else deal with it but he didn't. These are huge differences that are just ignored by people.

A lot changed after RM picked up on Marchisio. Pirlo sadly has nothing to offer, there's no clear opportunities for a defence splitting pass and RM are not throwing themselves about near their box.
