Ranieri flies Juve flag in Newcastle

Sunday 29 July, 2007

Claudio Ranieri believes only fitness schedules and Shay Given’s Man of the Match performance stopped Juventus winning in Newcastle.

The Bianconeri are still a month away from their Serie A opener, but created plenty of chances in the 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park this afternoon.

“We had so many shots on goal, especially in the first half,” commented the former Chelsea and Parma boss.

“We were missing something in front of the net, but that was above all down to our early pre-season training and goalkeeper Given, who was Man of the Match.”

Pavel Nedved, David Trezeguet and Marco Marchionni all tested Given in their first real friendly of the summer.

The game was decided by Jonathan Zebina’s defensive error to give away an Albert Luque penalty and an Andy Carroll tap-in after Gigi Buffon had parried Obafemi Martins’ strike.

“The team moved well, passed the ball around quickly, especially with some great one or two-touch football,” continued Ranieri.

“It’s a shame we conceded those two goals, as we could have done better in those situations. Now we look ahead to the next friendly with Hamburg. I will completely rotate the squad so everyone can gain match fitness.”

You certainly have a point Tonykart; I also fear the Almiron-Tiago partnership might offer too little solidity. Too little destructive work, too fancy. The defence need some filter work from our midfielders, before getting to action.

The defence was our weakest point last year and it is our weakest point this year as well. We signed Andrade and that was wise, but we have a very non-combative CM although Almiron would be perfect next to a destroyer. Grygera is no CB he should be playing RB instead of that waste of space Zebina who is only a good backup and I think Chiellini should start at CB, but is 10 times better than Molinaro at LB and should have played there instead. Ranieri was an idiot today.
 1st competitive match for juve, with like 4-5 new players who we have signed this summer. and still your insulting already the coach. it was a friendly, it went wrong but its a match for analyzing, and testing things out.

Especially since we have such a weak defense. I am not sure how we are going to run it this season, but I think Chiellini at CB is our best option. I think Chiellini is much better than Molinaro at LB, but CB is a far more important position right now. Plus, we need to get Grygera out at RB. But, either way, the defense as you said needs some filter work and Almiron and Nocerino could do that. Plus, Almiron's passing and vision exceeded my expectations today, he will still give us some creativity in the CM.

Pretty much agree with Ranieri. Thought we were OK generally. Two really poor mistakes from Zebina for the goals but otherwise not too bad defensively.

Agree with other folk saying Tiago-Almiron don't look solid enough, though Almiron did impress me.

Though we were better when Iaquinta moved closer to Trez to make it 4-4-2 as Trez tended to get isolate when up front by himself.

C'mon... think about it...

Zebina at RB?
Grygera at CB?
No Chiellini?
Almiron and Tiago?
Iaquinta as a playmaker?

I think many people on these forums could have gotten that right before the match. He was an IDIOT today. Our team did NOT have less talent. Sure, the chemistry was not fully there, but the lineup was poor. There is no excuse for that.

Zebina should be sold. yeah yeah he makes good runs, but he always makes blunders that cost us. put Brazzo or Grygera as RB. I don't judge players based on a few friendlies so I like to give players a bit of time to adjust.

We should go for something like this against Hamburg .

we dont know, but maybe chiellini will be sold, so thats one reason ranieri might not have played him? or he wants to boss with him or something.

almiron and tiago? WELL WHY NOT????? yes tiago was dissapointing but as i said before, 1st REAL TEST, today was first real test. Secondly, i honestly expected that if we sign tiago we gona start him. yes he had a average game, but it was his first real test match as i keep repeating.

Iaquinta wasnt a playmaker, he played on the wing in the first half and second half 4-4-2 with upfront with trez.

Iaquinta is the only real dissapointment for me, he didnt impress me in the world cup and i just think his not a starter for a club like juve. BUT ranieri needs to play him to see his value and see his potential. Better play him now and ranieri sees what kind of tactics are better for him, or when ranieri understands that iaquinta is a subs player. WHEN WILL YOU GIVE your new SIGNINGS TIME to show their potential if not NOW, in the friendlys. In league against inter or something if dp or trez or nedved happens to be injured?

in a way its good these things happened what happened. NOW they and we know whats not right and whats right. Thats what it is all about in friendly games.
We will see if we make more transfers, especially in defens.

dude.... FFS it's a friendly match!!! every coach wants to try out things when he join a new club and certainly wud try players in positions where he thought they'd play well!!! it's all about testing!!! testing players and tactics and all that stuff!!!

dont get so worked up... these games dont effectively mean anything significant! let the league start and THEN start your bashing! till then, take it easy!
