On the night of 22nd of April 2009 Juventus lost the last hope of winning a silverware for the season of 2008-2009. Although the last objective of the season is to finish second in the league is yet to be achieved or lost, I think its about time to start analyzing the season.
We did not make it a secret out main objective this season is to make an assault at the Champion's League but we did want to win the league.
So far:
1- Champion's League: knocked off at the second round.
2- Scudetto race: trying to maintain the second place
3- Coppa Italia: Knocked off at the semi-final.
==============
Last season (07-08) was out first season after the unjust relegation to Serie B. We bought a number of flops (Andrade, Almiron and Tiago) but we did get Iaquinta and later on Sissoko. We off loaded Almiron but kept Tiago (I guess because no-one else really wanted him). While Andrade stayed at his home.
Last season we finished 3rd and were knocked off the Coppa Italia early . Meaning We were only playing the league games.
We had lots of things to improve on IF WE WANTED TO BE COMPETITIVE on 3 fronts.
Now here is what went wrong in my opinion:
FIRST: The Management:
We bought Amauri at a very steep price, never the less he was a good acquisition. We got Melberg and Poulsen and brought back Giovinco, Marchisio and De Cegli. Last season our MAIN problem that the supposedly creative midfielder (Tiago) was simply A HUGE FLOP. While Nedved is getting older and hinted on a retirement we decided to just get back Giovinco. The managment got Poulsen (still puzzled on the reason). Maybe the management do not know that there are more classifications for a football player than Defender, Midfielder and attacker. Maybe they think all midfielders are the same ..etc.
Just before the Pre-season ends we got Manninger which might have been our best acquisition of the season.
SECOND: The Medical Staff:
Whenever a team goes through a repeated injury crisis' in the same season the first finger to be pointed is to the medical staff. The training process and supervision was lacking alot. We lost 75% of out player due to injuries this season. Around 6-7 players played almost all games of the season. So it is just logical that by the end of the season when it really matters they got fried.
THIRD: Claudio Ranieri:
He came to us after promotion, took the team. He insisted on Tiago who was a flop. But hey all coaches have their flop selections even Sir Lippi Almighty. I have defended Ranieri in many cases throughout the season for only one reason, I believed that Sacking a coach in the middle of the season usually brings out the worst of the team rather than the best, especially that the suggested replacement were not that impressive. But through out the season he has made numerous tactical and professional mistakes. I will name a few from the top of my head:
1- The infamous DC/DP sub :melayyanandmessi:
2- Answering players through the media. Very unprofessional. Trezeguet was childish/frustrated after the chelsea game and steamed it up in the media. During the Triade and Lippi years if a similar thing happened the coach and management would call the player and deal with the situation behind closed doors.
3- He has a responsibility in keeping the players injury free. So if we have a multiple injury crisis' he has many questions to answer to.
4- His poor choices of formations and players. The latest example was tonight's match. We were playing at our last hope of silverware he kept many key players on the bench and brought in the players with the worst mentality possible and playing the impotent long balls from the first minutes.
5- I think clashing up with Trezeguet might have been one of his worst acts. Trezeguet is a proven goalscoring machine. Alongside Del Piero they have both scored over 400 goals. He has the ability to finish the dullest chances. AND he has just scored 20 goals in the last season.
6- The tactics lacked solidity by all means.
FOURTH: Players:
I won't discuss or blame any players, because unlike Inter we don't have playboys (e.g. Adraino). But in the same time, many of today's squad are not by any mean Juve material. Molinaro, Grygera, poulsen, Tiago ..etc Those are players who have been playing as a 1st 11 for a good period of this season.
A renovation in players is needed. We need at least:
1 x CB
1 x RB
1 X LB
1 X Offensive midfielder
1 X Left Wing
And if we are to sell any of the players we have we need to get a replacement for that particular player. Forget about selling Trezeguet or Buffon. Veterans know what it takes to win a trophy and we need every single one of them to win or at least attempt on winning next season's trophy. if we are to compete in Europe we need a deeper squad maybe an additional CB and another Central midfielder added to the list above.
These are just few points from the top of my head.. I was just too upset to see us get knocked out of the last trophy and I think its time to discuss this now.
NOTE:
I would like to give special thanks to Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved for this tired-less work and efforts to hold the team up high. Without those two we wouldn't be even in the top 5 of the league.
