There isn't a written rule by FIFA or UEFA what counts as an assist and what doesn't. That's why the numbers differ from source to source and the differences are sometimes surprisingly big.
Since it's nothing official, I decided to follow ESPNs way of counting assists. They count them in a way that it's an assist if noone else touches the ball between the pass and the shot which ends up with a goal.
So, if one says that player X should have 10 assists instead of 7 and supports his statement with examples (the way princepino did above) I can't really say that he's wrong. It's just that I started counting them the way ESPN does it and until FIFA and UEFA come up with an official rule, I guess I should continue doing this the way I'm doing it for years now.
