and who would create the chances.
Every succesfull team is build from the back

beck, chiellini, bonucci, cissokho, mascherano, marchisio, is an extremely resillient block of concrete to build on.

our problem isnt the scoring, its the conceding. replace all out games we lost cause of brainfart goals, by grinded out draws, and check how high we would be up the table

not to mention that:
- with such defence, we can pretty much field krasic in a free role
- beck and especially cissokho are pretty damn good going forward
- quag, was doing pretty well before he got injured, and juventus was scoring alot in general.

we need the concrete defensive structure we once had, coupled with the mentality the world feared us for.

its the only way to link up the the victories of the past

Not true.

Some are, others aren't.

There you have it, you're living in the past.

Dude, even with the best defensive unit in world football, under Capello, we still struggled to do anything in Europe. Buffon, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Vieira, Emerson, et cetera. Clearly the best in the world at the time. We could grind out results in Serie A, sure. But times are a changing and Milan and Udinese are demonstrating good football can garner success in Serie A.

I agree that the defense is the main priority at this point, but to become a successful side again, in this day and age, we need a well-rounded team. More times than not, quality and skill win out. So that's why we should be looking at classy young players like Pastore while using the budget properly to improve the defense.

I say build dominate defense and the rest will fall in to place. Until we are safe at the back we will limit our attacking players
I disagree. Better defense will earn a few draws against smaller sides who like to counter us and did so with a lot of success this year. However, if you want to win, you need creativity to break down their defenses, therefore we need to look at players like Pastore.

If we can't create chances we can't create goals...no goals, no wins. We need the next big thing for attack, someone that can pick apart a defense with a moment of genius.

Think about it. With proper fullbacks, PDC and Sorenson as cover there will be no Grygera, Grosso, Motta or Traore.
What makes the difference if we splurge on a player like Pastore/Neymar then buy full backs? Why is it full backs have to come first? There doesn't have to be a specific order you know...just as long as we get them.
