I don't agree with that theory.

Real works fine when there is noone who defends. Barcelona's midfield is piss poor for defense eventhough they play positioning football. Neither Ribery nor Robben defense in Bayern and so many teams ignore that, and do fine.
Barca play a pressing game a s team, so it's a totally different system. And all three of their midfielders actively take part in defending in that system because they all work hard to press the ball when they aren't in possession.

Real are a mess defensively in most games because the play without a defensive system and only have two midfielders who defend. It's no coincidence that they got hammered in the Nou Camp when they tried to play their normal game, but have done well against Barca when deploying a properly organised and defensively aware midfield.

In a 4-4-2 you want both central midfielders and one of the wingers to cover in defense, that's true. But I think you set yourself for disaster when you expect to be defending all the time.
Depends on whether you put out a sensible system with appropriate players to play a defensive game.

Is it likely to be a 4-4-2 next season or is it not known yet?
It's unclear, since no-one knows who the manager will be.

All those teams tend to set out to hold possession of the ball. Juve seems to have a defense first approach.

Bayern has had defensive deficiencies for over two seasons now. Though that's mostly been to their poor defenders, but the lack of midfield cover doesn't help.
IMO defense is supposed to defend and it stays at that. When there's a DM in the team then wingers should only track back and cover a bit, but no defense job whatsoever. Otherwise it's a dull game, old football.

Real Madrid plays Di Maria, Ozil, Ronaldo and nobody does a good defending there while at the same time they have Marcelo as a RB, very offensive fullback.

Barca is the only reason they played like that. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't repeat that formation in CL, against any other team. Playing great defensive match against Barcelona is a must.

Usually they have most of the possession and are defending very little, which is why they only need such protection against Barca.

I think, in addition to the back four, you need three players who will defend.

So, in a 4-4-2, I would expect one of the wingers to actively take part in defending. Pepe/Marchisio do that, though, so Krasic shouldn't be asked to do as much as he has been.
I don't agree with that either. And Pepe doesn't really do much defensively, he just tracks back, big deal. In the Italian 4-4-2 junk all four midfielders come back anyway, so at least have a winger with some attacking skill out there, not Marchisio.

New quality signings 4 next season:

    VDW
    Cissokho
    Hazard
    Benzema
Congrats to whatever teams sign those players because they are not coming to Juve

I think he's a good player, but I'd only get him if the 4-3-3 would be the main deployment for next year. Obviously he'd be our second best option for the flank. I would prefer Hazard, but Menez would suffice.
Indeed, he's the coolest Belgian of all time

4-3-3 is the only formation acceptable to me.

    Krasic-----------------Menez
    ------------Matri

Stick Melo, another ATHLETIC box-to-box player (not Marchisio), and a classy playmaker like Modric behind those 3 and you have yourself a decent team*.

    *With 2 new fullbacks.

Menez would be such an excellent and most definitely a welcomed addition to this squad. Get him please.
