I just found a high level of hypocrisy in referring to certain tastes as "average joe", no jokes intended. You can now ignore my remarks, I am not a fan of arguing about taste.
Okay, hypothetical situation. Let's say you had a friend who was brilliant, right? Real intellectual, knows everything important about culture, amazes you with his intellectual brilliance sometimes. Then he says there's nothing he loves more than bowling. And you say "bowling? I love bowling, but in your case I would expect something more refined. Chess, perhaps."

Any references to real people are coincidental etc etc.

Just because you think bowling is an average joe activity it does not make it one. Same goes to you thinking The Doors, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pulp Fiction, etc. are for the average joes, it does not make them so.

But they are. Bowling is really popular, ie. it's a popular sport. And the other items you mentioned are too, thus they are part of a mainstream taste.

I think the difference is the interpretation of the term "average joe" - to me it means an apathetic, lazy person that isn't motivated. By that definition then Pulp Fiction, The Doors etc. would the average joe of indie cinema and alt music because they are dominant and popular sides of those markets that have more crossover success than the films of Gaspar Noe or music by The Guess Who etc.

average joe and mainstream is basically the same.

Now back on topic, Hairy Luftballoons are my favorite but not many people know of them. Are they considered mainstream?
