Baggio and Alex were playing in Serie A while it arguably had the best defenders that this game has ever seen and run rings around them, league where 7 great teams took part and almost equally fought for the title each season. It's not hard to be effective in a league where most defenders can't tackle, nor position themselves adequately, anticipate, etc...

But there is zero reason to search for arguments besides just playing the devils advocate out of boredom, Messi would dominate that period's Serie A still, he is just that kind of quality of player thats above others.
