Premier League just signed a new TV deal, 70% increase compared to the previous one (which was nearly twice as big as next year's Serie A deal). 6.5 billion euro for three years. Italy is so competitive.

Italy's Mediaset, Sky Italia Reach Deal on Soccer TV Rights

Agreement Covers 2015 to 2018 Seasons for $779 Million, Says Source

By Manuela Mesco

Mediaset and Sky Italia Thursday reached a deal on TV broadcasting rights for the 2015 to 2018 Italian soccer seasons, according to a person familiar with the situation, marking the end of a controversial awarding process.

The decision could affect the value of Mediaset's loss-making pay TV business at a time when the company—owned by the family of former premier Silvio Berlusconi —is seeking a partner to invest in its pay TV division. Both companies see soccer rights as the biggest driver for subscriptions.

The person said that the media companies reached a deal that will allow Sky Italia to broadcast all the games in the three soccer seasons for €572 million ($778.9 million) a year. Sky Italia is controlled by 21st Century Fox Inc., which until June was part of the same company as The Wall Street Journal's parent, News Corp.

Mediaset will only broadcast the games of the main eight teams in the league—a total of 248—for the price of €373 million.

The TV rights being auctioned were split into five packages. Both Mediaset and Sky Italia bid for the two that included the largest number of games. Sky Italia placed the highest bid, offering €775 million in total. Mediaset's highest bid was for a third package to broadcast the remaining 132 games, but its bid was conditional on winning the rights for one of the two main packages.

The decision comes after weeks of battling. Mediaset claimed that Sky Italia already had a dominant position in the pay TV business so it couldn't be awarded both main packages because of competition issues. Sky Italia instead complained that the rights to broadcast 65% of the games shouldn't be awarded to Mediaset, which didn't place the best bid.

The total value of the rights for the soccer league is €945 million a year, €116 million higher than the current value, the person added.

French TV Canal Plus and Al Jazeera were among possible bidders for the digital terrestrial TV service, Mediaset Premium. But a person close to the matter said previously that any deal would depend on the outcome of the TV sports rights allocation.

Sky Italia has around 60% of the market share for soccer package subscriptions to pay TV. Mediaset Premium has 24%, according to data gathered by Fitch Ratings. Other small operators hold the remaining share of the market.

Subscriptions for pay TV in Italy have peaked already, according to research firm Sanford C. Bernstein. The pricing strategy of the two main players in the country confirms that they expect "limited or no growth" and that the pay TV penetration has declined slightly in 2013, reaching 34% of households.

Pretty sure Serie A has the 2nd biggest (local) TV rights deal.

Doesn't matter. The gap between the two leagues is increasing. Serie A is by far the league that relies most on TV revenue, when that revenue source decreases comparatively to other leagues we have a problem. TV rights is the only thing that makes us remotely competitive, doesn't matter if we get more with our next deal if we get less comparatively to other leagues. Real and Barca will probably sign new deals soon which puts them ahead of the top English clubs, I imagine their deals will be in excess of 200 million annually. TV rights are Serie A's bread and butter while other leagues have more diversified income. Bayern has merchandising revenue to make up for any gap (the average German salary affords more) and they operate in a stable German economy. Italy doesn't have that or full stadiums to rely on. Besides, if stadiums were built Italian clubs cannot gross the same amount as English clubs due to the economic difference between these countries. Chelsea gross twice as much as us with a simularly sized stadium. Since this is a macroeconomic problem even the best minds in football cannot fix it.

In the rare instances that Serie A seems to take one step forward other leagues take three. People need to realize that better things aren't around the corner. This is the reality which is here to stay.
