Mehdi Benatia gave some insight into the chaotic non-penalty in Sassuolo-Roma. “You can’t ask a desperate player if he was fouled.”

The incident occurred during the first half of today’s early kick-off at the Mapei Stadium.

Benatia went to challenge Nicola Sansone and the Sassuolo striker fell. At first Nicola Rizzoli had not awarded the penalty, then did so on advice from the goal-line assistant, but after several minutes of debate he changed his mind again.

“In my view, the referee didn’t want to give the penalty and the official behind the line called him over, but they didn’t understand each other,” Benatia told Sky Sport Italia at half-time.

“Then he asked Sansone to tell the truth, but we were all angry, because you can’t ask a player who is desperate for points to avoid relegation if he was fouled or not.

“He said: 'I slipped, but Benatia pulled my shirt.’ So the referee said 'In that case, no it’s not a penalty.’ Thankfully it all went the right way in the end.”

According to Pjanic, Roma are still title contenders
The outcome of tonight will determine that for me.

I still don't think that the league is as finished as others do, Roma have a game in hand, we have Napoli and Roma away and could potentially become jaded if our Europa League run continues.

I think a win tonight would be a huge step

I'm confident of a win tonight.

Roma still have to face Parma, Cagliarli, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Milan, Catania, Juve, Genoa

Our schedule is Napoli, Livorno, Udinese, Bologna, Sassuolo, Atalanta, Roma, Cagliarli

We have a significant easier schedule than theirs even if we have the Europa League. I can see Roma dropping points against Parma, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Possibly Milan and for sure against us.

I hope that roma game against Juve will have zero importance for the scudeto race.
We should be champions until then.

For someone who's allegedly Italian this kind of mistake is unforgivable. I thought it was a typo at first, but you repeated the same mistake again. Is it maybe how locals call it?

I guess math was never his strong subject.

That Sassuolo vs Roma ref is indeed ridiculous; and to think that he is going to be Italy's representative @ the WC :howler:

 He also spells Atalanta as Atlanta (like the Hawks and Falcons).

:agree: If we maintain an 8-10 point lead, by the time that game comes around it shall be rendered meaningless.
