AC Milan's new signing Keisuke Honda: I worry fans will boo me
Keisuke Honda has admitted after joining AC Milan that he fears getting booed by Italy's "tough" fans.
The Japan international was formally unveiled as a Rossoneri player Wednesday, having already agreed to join the Serie A side on a free transfer from Russian outfit CSKA Moscow.
Honda is looking forward to the challenge of plying himself in one of Europe's most prestigious leagues but, after taking in Milan's 3-0 win over Atalanta at San Siro on Monday, he is now expecting a rough ride from the country's notoriously demanding supporters.
"I paid attention to how the fans reacted to each play," he explained in an interview with SkyPerfecTV. "Each country I've played in is different but [Italian fans] are tough; they boo a lot. I worry that they'll boo me."
Honda also said he has little command of Italian and may not even learn the local language, as he feels he could get by on his English alone.
"I can't do more than greetings in Italian," he said. "But everyone can speak English - I was surprised. Maybe I don't need to learn Italian. If they don't understand my English, I'll have to learn Italian. But I shook hands with all the players and Kaka is fluent in English. It felt positive meeting him."
Despite Monday's win over Atalanta, Milan is still sitting in the wrong half of the table, in 11th. Honda, though, is convinced that Massimiliano Allegri's men can still turn their season around.
"They're all world class players at Milan, so we just have to organize ourselves better," the attacking midfielder said. "If we can do that, we can beat the world. I've thought about how I'll work with my new team-mates, but I just have to play like I always do."
