Lazio 'sign' Zarate
Thursday 30 April, 2009
Mauro Zarate, the 22-year-old Argentine striker, has signed a contract with Lazio, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

The talented youngster has enjoyed a fine first season in Italy, scoring 14 goals in 31 appearances for the Biancocelesti.

He is currently on loan from Qatari side Al-Saad, who are in the final stages of negotiations to sell Zarate to Lazio.

The two clubs have yet to decide on a fee, but the news that Zarate has signed a contract for Lazio strengthens their hand considerably.

Al-Saad were hoping to start a bidding war with other interested parties but they can no longer do so now Zarate has committed to Lazio.

Zarate has reportedly signed a five-year deal with the club worth over £10m net that will officially expire on June 30 2014.

A £40m Spanish style minimum fee release clause has been inserted into his contract to scare off any clubs interested in signing him.

Lazio President Claudio Lotito hopes to wrap up the deal by the start of next week and is expected to pay £16m for Zarate.

Poborsky predicts Inter collapse
Thursday 30 April, 2009

Former Lazio midfielder Karel Poborsky believes Inter will collapse and let the Scudetto slip from their grasp just as they did in 2002.

Inter travelled to Lazio on the final day of the 2001-02 season needing a win to secure a historic title win.

They crumbled, though, losing 4-2, allowing Juventus, who beat Udinese, to sneak in and finish top of the table.

“That match remains unforgettable,” Poborsky remembers. “It was my last game in Italy and it left me with a wonderful memory, giving my friend Pavel Nedved a nice present.

“Inter risk another slip up against Lazio this weekend. There can be a surprise on Saturday and Milan are in a position to comeback.”

Inter host Lazio on Saturday evening and will be hoping to extend their seven-point lead over Milan, who travel to Catania on Sunday.

Milan doesn't have a chance to win the scudetto but i like it how everyone puts pressure on them.
Now watch them lose pts against Catania, the way they did every single time people started talking about Milan having a chance for the scudetto (the same happened with us too).

The only team who can take advantage of this is Juventus.

Italian league split planned after disagreement

The Italian soccer league is on course to split in two after a meeting of Serie A and B presidents on Thursday ended without agreement over future financial arrangements.

"Nineteen Serie A clubs have today discussed starting a 'Serie A League'," a league statement said.

"The decision has been taken given it has been impossible to reach an agreement with Serie B clubs."

One Serie A club, which media reports said was relegation-threatened Lecce, was not part of the talks.

The Italian professional league is made up of the top flight Serie A and the second tier Serie B.

Presidents of second division clubs have been at loggerheads for years with their Serie A counterparts over how wealth is spread within the league.

Several Serie B sides have recently encountered financial problems and a split from Serie A may make their situations worse if money no longer filters down.

Serie B did not have a television deal last season and only managed an agreement shortly before the start of this term.

The league statement said Maurizio Beretta, the former head of Italy's employers' association, had been proposed as the new president of a breakaway Serie A after league incumbent Antonio Matarrese failed to find consensus over a way forward.

LOSE REVENUE

The English Premier League broke away from the other three professional divisions in 1992 and has gone on to become the richest in the world thanks to the absence of smaller clubs sapping resources.

Serie A clubs have watched with envy as English sides dominated the transfer market and the Champions League in the last two seasons.

AC Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani has been among the most vocal about Serie A's problems and the need to find a solution to close the gap on the English.

Italian clubs do not own their stadiums, normally renting them from the local council, meaning they lose out on revenue.

Juventus are breaking ground by building their own stadium on the site of their former Stadio delle Alpi home, which will be the first Italian soccer arena to be sponsored.

Italian tax laws also complicate transfer deals.

All of this has led Serie A presidents to come up with a radical proposal to save money and concentrate on competing at the highest level.

"This time it's for real. It's not satisfactory but it was necessary," Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini told reporters after several threats of a breakaway in the past.

Italian 'Premier League' created
Thursday 30 April, 2009
The Lega Calcio has split between Serie A and B, effectively creating a sort of Premier League in Italy from 2010-11.

Since 1946 the Lega Calcio represented all the clubs in the top two tiers, but the inability to decide on how the money would be split has seen the big sides break away.

“We have created the new Lega Serie A,” announced Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini upon leaving the meeting in Rome.

“Am I satisfied? No, but it was necessary.”

Only Lecce did not take part in the request to split from Serie B sides, but the 19-club vote was the majority needed for this radical step.

Maurizio Beretta has been named the man who will be in charge of this new top flight union of clubs.

“I am honoured to put myself at the service of the clubs to adopt a more European and international approach in a sector where we have the potential for extraordinary results,” said Beretta.

“The mandate is clear, we will take the first steps to construct a Lega A and there are several details that need to be whittled down. The process will develop over the next 12 months.”

Beretta was the candidate to be the new Lega Calcio President, but the disagreements over numerous meetings prompted this new role.

It also means an interim President for the Lega Calcio in its existing form must be chosen because the clubs failed to elect a new leader.

“We are starting work now so that this Lega A can be operational from July 1 2010,” commented Milan Vice-President and former Lega Calcio President Adriano Galliani.

“Next year there should be no particular problems because we have already agreed on the division of money within Serie A and between A and B. From 2010 there will be separate Lega entities for A, B and C.”

It was different back then. Inter slips and immediatly you have pressure on Juve to win and keep fighting for the scudetto. We failed.
Now there is no scudetto or Coppa pressure on us. We just play to finish the season, the way Milan were playing (and winning) in the last month or so.

Flamengo announce Adri deal
Thursday 30 April, 2009
Adriano “just needs to sign the contract” to resume his career in Brazil, announced Flamengo.

The striker tore up his agreement with Inter by mutual consent earlier this month after personal problems prompted him to take a sabbatical from the sport.

He was considering a retirement from football altogether, but he is already set to get back on to the playing field.

“Adriano just needs to sign the contract,” explained Flamengo chief Delair Dumbrosck on Uol Deporte.

“We are seeking a great achievement in contracting Adriano’s image rights and using them with effect from July.

“But he will play for Flamengo before that date.”

It has never been entirely clarified whether Inter had a clause in the rescission forbidding Adriano from playing for another European club within a certain time-frame.

In any case, the decision to carry on his career in Brazil – where he already rediscovered his form during a seven-month loan spell at San Paolo last year – suggests he is putting those personal problems behind him.
