Cassano didn't have a terrible game either. He put in some decent crosses and passes -- a lot of constructive stuff up front without taking a lot of shots. He seemed in better form than Lippi made him out to be.

how come he played?
has he signed a contract?
Should be, since Spalletti claimed that he would freeze out Cassano if he doesn't sign the contract becos he will treat Cassano as a "passerby that isn't a Roma player"

Roma kick ball into touch Tuesday 13 September, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma’s 1-0 home defeat to Udinese on Sunday may result in an axing – for the unique Giallorossi ball.

The red and yellow halved football made its official debut at the Stadio Olimpico at the weekend but was widely criticised.

Spectators, TV fans and players all moaned that it was tough to pick out on the green grass and a change may be on the cards.

Roma are contractually obliged to use the Diadora product for all their home games this season.

However, that agreement is now being reviewed given the verbal blasting which the ball has now received.

"We are assessing the situation even if the ball is used with great satisfaction by Hanover," said Diadora commercial director Gelindo Bordin.

"We are ready to find a new solution but we shouldn’t forget that Roma had a lot of time to test the product."

Although the football has been widely condemned, it is a commercial success, proving to be a big hit with children.

Idiots! Its the team who needs changing! not the dam ball! ......Any excuse! Geez!

Week 2 spotlight: De Sanctis denies Roma Monday 12 September, 2005

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Player of the Week: De Sanctis (Udinese)

Udinese ‘keeper Morgan De Sanctis has been regarded as one of Italy’s best for the last few years now and his performance at Roma on Sunday illustrated exactly why. The former Juventus bench warmer put in another extraordinary display between the sticks as he single-handedly kept out the Giallorossi.

De Sanctis will certainly feel that he had a point to prove after being leapfrogged by Angelo Peruzzi for the Italy No 1 jersey last week. The Friuli hero had been a regular in the set-up behind Gigi Buffon and Flavio Roma for the last 12 months. So when those two custodians got injured, the 28-year-old could have been forgiven for thinking that he would be handed the gloves for the Scotland and Belarus trips.

However, boss Marcello Lippi opted to recall Peruzzi instead. Although the Lazio veteran could arguably be considered as a safer option, De Sanctis is a player who fans should feel at ease with. He’s undoubtedly one of the bravest in the Division and his reflexes aren’t bad either. His two miracle stops from Daniele De Rossi were sublime, saves worthy of the three points which his side took away from the Stadio Olimpico.

De Sanctis started his career in the Second Division with Pescara back in 1994. His form during his three-year spell on the Adriatic coast alerted the attention of Juventus, who plucked him to ironically be back-up for Peruzzi. The Guardiagrele-born shot-stopper moved to Udine in 1998 but only became a regular during the 2002-03 season.

Cassano skips UEFA clash Tuesday 13 September, 2005

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Antonio Cassano will miss Roma’s UEFA Cup test with Aris Salonicco after suffering from a muscular problem.

The contract rebel made a substitute appearance in the 1-0 home defeat to Udinese, his first of the season after negotiations for a new deal resumed.

However, he pulled a muscle in his left thigh during training and tests have confirmed he’ll need absolute rest for the next three days. This rules him out of Thursday’s UEFA Cup opener against the Greek club and leaves him in real doubt for Sunday’s visit to Livorno.

There are also suggestions in the Press that Cassano’s contract renegotiations have hit problems regarding the image rights. The ex-Bari starlet will not sign unless he receives the outstanding £700,000 from the club.

Cassano’s contract expires in June 2006 and Roma have threatened to leave him on the sidelines for the entire season if he refuses to sign a new deal, fully aware that they would otherwise lose him on a free transfer. Meanwhile, the Giallorossi are looking ahead to Thursday’s UEFA Cup tie with a word of advice from a former Serie A boss.

“Roma won’t have any problems against Aris,” assured Alberto Malesani, who is forging a Coaching career in Greece with Panathinaikos.

“They are one of the few teams that held us last season, as they make the most of the incredible heat generated by the home fans, but outside of that stadium they aren’t much to write home about. The best players have left and Aris don’t have a Francesco Totti like talismanic figure.”

Malesani’s Panathinaikos will take on Serie A side Udinese in the Champions League tomorrow evening.

Sampdoria - Milan

Stadio Marassi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milan visit the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Week 3 to take on one of last season’s surprise packages. Though Sampdoria aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, nobody can deny that Walter Novellino’s side are one of the most effective in the League. The visit of the Rossoneri will represent their first major test of the season and it will be interesting to see how Milan’s attacking excellence gets on against a solid unit.

The match also represents an opportunity for several of Samp’s summer signings to show what they can do against Milan. After all, Sam Dalla Bona, Marco Borriello and Ignazio Abate are all owned by the San Siro outfit, although only Dalla Bona is likely to be in the starting eleven. ‘Keeper Francesco Antonioli and Coach Novellino are also both former Rossoneri players.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side head into the contest on the back of a resounding Champions League win over Fenerbahce. That match represented a return to his brilliant best for Kakà, and the Brazilian talent will be looking to take that form with him to Genoa. Alberto Gilardino, axed for the midweek game, is likely to return in place of Christian Vieri to partner Andriy Shevchenko in attack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sampdoria (probable): Antonioli; C Zenoni, Castellini, Sala, Pisano; Diana, Palombo, Volpi, Tonetto; Bonazzoli, Flachi

Milan (probable): Dida; Cafu, Stam, Maldini, Kaladze; Ambrosini, Pirlo, Serginho; Kakà; Gilardino, Shevchenko
