Serie A Predictions: Round 8
10/22/2005 6:26:00 AM
Juventus are after the 8th consecutive league win which would mean equalling the previous record held by the same Bianconeri. Milan and Inter face difficult ties against Palermo and Udinese respectively, but the match of the day is definitely the Roman derby in program on Sunday night.
Chievo – Cagliari
The donkeys are really flying high, higher than anyone could ever expect at the start of the season. The only two defeats so far arrived against Juventus and Inter, whereas Chievo managed to beat or at least draw against teams of their own level. Cagliari are renowned for their poor away form and this should not change much in this encounter as the Rossoblu can only avoid the drop from their home games.
Prediction: 1

Fiorentina – Parma
The Viola need to bounce back from the defeat suffered against Lazio 7 days ago, a result which stopped Fiorentina’s positive run. On the other hand, Parma are not doing too well and further slips might complicate matters for a team which definitely has the potential to do much better than its current 16th place. However, the high-flying Fiorentina will not be the side against whom they can really hope to achieve the three points or even one point.
Prediction: 1

Lecce – Juventus
Two reasons will be pushing Juventus for a win here. The first one is that the team wants to reach the 8th consecutive win and their equal their previous record from the 50s and 80s, but more important, the team wants to find way its winning form after the Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich. Lecce showed signs of improvement in the previous weekends, but against a concentrated and angry Juve side, it will be difficult to see them take any points from this encounter.
Prediction: 2

Livorno – Reggina
The home team will want to cancel and quite possibly forget the thrashing received last weekend by Inter, and what better opponent than Reggina? Despite last weekend’s win over Lecce, the southern side still seem too weak, even for Livorno who will want to confirm themselves in the upper side of the table, led by the returning Lucarelli.
Prediction: 1

Messina – Ascoli
The Sicilians are just a pale shadow of the team admired last season, and a positive result against Ascoli is a necessity. The Bianconeri have so far impressed, obtaining important results, especially at home, last of which against Sampdoria. The Giallorossi definitely need the points more, and this motivation might be more than a good reason why to back Messina in this match.
Prediction: 1

Milan – Palermo
The Rossoneri need the home win to continue their run after Juventus, but Palermo will be a very tough team to beat. The only problem with the Rosanero has been consistency, otherwise this squad has all the qualities to do well and even trouble or beat the big teams, as was the case against Inter. Milan will have to do without Shevchenko, but Gilardino will be all motivated to score his first goal in front of his home crowd. If Palermo tries to defend like PSV did, then the Sicilian side might be able to leave San Siro with a point, otherwise Milan will most likely take all three points at stake.
Prediction: 1

Roma – Lazio
The most important derby in Italy returns on Sunday night. Roma arrive to this match with the hunger and need of points, as Lazio sit 5 points above the Giallorossi in Serie A. The Biancocelesti have in fact done very well so far, exceeding all expectations, and will now want to confirm their good form in the biggest game of the season for these two sides. Usually these kind of games are won by the teams who are doing worst, as motivation will be higher, and that is why we shall go for a Roma win here.
Prediction: 1

Sampdoria – Siena
The Blucerchiati will host the surprising Tuscan side in a bid to get back on the winning track after last weekend’s slip at Ascoli. Sampdoria have lost some of their consistency, which might prove their weakest point in the race for the fourth available Champions League spot. However, last season the Doriani had a terrible start to their year and then went on to reach 5th place in Serie A, just one point behind the 4th place. This is their chance to get all three points against a team which is not that good when playing away from home.
Prediction: 1

Treviso – Empoli
An encounter between two newly promoted sides, with Treviso still after their first win of the season, while Empoli want to confirm themselves in the middle of the league table. Treviso will finally be playing in their own stadium after playing their previous home games in Padova. This will surely boost the team’s motivation and help them achieve at least a draw against the in-form Tuscan side.
Prediction: X

Udinese – Inter
The Nerazzurri travel to Udine for a delicate match against another Champions League team. Inter cannot afford to lose points and following their 2-0 debacle at Porto, the Milanese team will need to win the three points to bounce back from that defeat and prove that it was just a minor incident. Udinese have a good opportunity to prove their worth and that they deserve to be there among the best, but that will most likely not be enough.
Prediction: 2

Utter destruction tonight. Toni's finishing was just impeccable, and Jorgenson and Fiore had some excellent crosses. When those guys are producing at midfield, they make Toni look all the more like a genius.

Even if Morfeo was out, I cannot see this Parma squad making it through to Serie A next season.

Messina – Ascoli
The Sicilians are just a pale shadow of the team admired last season, and a positive result against Ascoli is a necessity. The Bianconeri have so far impressed, obtaining important results, especially at home, last of which against Sampdoria. I still cannot believe how 10-man Ascoli pulled out the draw on a free kick in the final 30 seconds of 5 minutes of injury time. Man, was Messina pissed...

Parma was absolutely owned today by Fiorentina. Toni was fantastic scoring another hattrick, while Parma really struggled to contain La Viola attack. This could perhaps spell even more trouble for the Gialloblu's coach Berretta.

Ancelotti sets sights on Juve Sunday 23 October, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Scudetto showdown with Juventus is just a week away and Carlo Ancelotti hopes to beat Palermo and Empoli first to close the gap.

“If the Rosanero we’ll face today are the same as the ones who beat Inter 3-2, then we’ll have some real problems,” noted the tactician. “This is a side that uses the flanks a great deal, has a player like Eugenio Corini that dictates the play and two great strikers who can become dangerous in open space. The antidote to their power is to maintain possession for 90 minutes.”

The Rossoneri will be without Alessandro Nesta and Andriy Shevchenko due to injury, although this could be a blessing in disguise. Last season they played twelve games without the Ukrainian and won nine, drawing the other three.

“We have to keep an eye on Shevchenko’s heel problem every day and when the pain passes, he can play again. Losing him is a real blow, but Pippo Inzaghi is finally fit again and is able to play from the start. Clearly he’ll take a while to achieve match fitness, but he’s more motivated than anyone.”

These two players are also doubts to feature against Juventus next Saturday in a game that last season decided the Scudetto race.

“I don’t know if Nesta and Shevchenko will play, but the Bianconeri are the last thing on my mind at the moment,” insisted Ancelotti. “Clearly we hope to close the gap during this week, although I don’t think Juve’s defeat at Bayern Munich will affect them.”

Despite Palermo’s strong midfield, Milan will stick with the two-striker system and Ancelotti gives Alberto Gilardino the nod.

“Gilardino on his own upfront could be useful in other games, but we have to win this and two forwards is much better in that situation. My team has always found it easy to score goals and, when someone like Shevchenko is absent, everyone has to take on more responsibility.”

Spalletti: It'll be Montella's derby Sunday 23 October, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vincenzo Montella is yet to score this season, but Luciano Spalletti believes he can win the Derby della Capitale for Roma.

“This can be the decisive match for the Giallorossi, the one that changes the course of our campaign,” said the Coach ahead of his first taste of the Rome derby. “I have always dreamed of experiencing a big match like this.”

Spalletti’s career since joining from Udinese in the summer has been inconsistent, as Roma have lost two of their three home games and are currently mired in 14th place, but victory over bitter rivals Lazio can make all the difference.

“I don’t envy anything about the Biancocelesti. I’m only jealous of people who have hair,” joked the bald-headed tactician. “Paolo Di Canio may be able to charge up the Lazio atmosphere, but we have Francesco Totti and Montella who can win this derby for Roma. Vincenzo has recovered from a back problem and is raring to go.”

The striker has already put eight goals past Lazio in previous ‘Stracittadina’ encounters at the Stadio Olimpico, but is still looking for his first Serie A mark of the season and has only scored twice in the League since February. Other surprises could be in store for Sunday night’s big match.

“I am thinking about using our new goalkeeper Alexander Marangao Donieber Doni, but this doesn’t mean that Gianluca Curci has disappointed,” revealed Spalletti. Doni was tested in Thursday’s 2-1 UEFA Cup win away to Tromso and could make a memorable Serie A debut in the Rome derby, especially as it was his 26th birthday yesterday.

The temperature in the capital is rising and so is the pressure, as 2000 fans attended Saturday’s training session and spoke to members of the team. Totti was asked to run under the Curva Nord – occupied by the Lazio supporters – and celebrate if Roma scored a goal, while Spalletti was warned that failure to win this match would result in mass protests.

In case the message hadn’t come through loud and clear, the Roma supporters unveiled a giant banner that read: ‘Heaven or Hell – the choice is yours.’

Cosmi aims to catch Inter Sunday 23 October, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A victory against Inter today will allow Udinese to catch the Nerazzurri in the table and Serse Cosmi is confident of achieving this feat.

“We can certainly do it,” smiled the Friuli boss. “The team is doing well, so anyone is within their grasp, even if clearly we will be facing a side of great quality and potential.”

Inter have stuttered of late, losing against both Juventus and Porto, even if they thrashed Livorno 5-0 in-between those two defeats.

Udinese are also back on track after suffering four straight losses during Vincenzo Iaquinta’s exile as a result of a contract dispute and Cosmi will be meeting some familiar faces.

“Jose Ze Maria and Marco Materazzi are players who made the history of Perugia in my time there. I owe a lot to them and the others who were with us on that journey, as if it wasn’t for them then I wouldn’t be here today Coaching a club like Udinese. I often speak with Marco and we’ll be back on perfectly friendly terms as soon as the final whistle is blown.”

Cosmi is forced to reshuffle his squad, as both Jose Luis Vidigal and Christian Obodo are suspended for the big game.

“I have full confidence in Giampiero Pinzi to fill in. He is working his back to form after some unlucky injuries and I saw him motivated and determined during training this week. I expect a great deal from him.”

Fun match to watch at the San Siro, where Milan pulled out a 2-1 victory over Palermo. Palermo had some great work up front to create the first goal, with a beautiful assist by Makinwa. But Gattuso countered with a fantastic, nearly-blind left-footed turn-around lob at the edge of the box for the equalizer. The rest was pretty much Milan on the press and finally netting one with Pippo's lunging cranium.

And a wild one with Samp-Siena today. Three penalties, the last one being the last kick of the game by Volpi that gave Samp the point. Flacchi got sent off late in the game for mouthing off with the ref, so we won't be seeing him at the delle Alpi this week. However, I don't think it's such a great loss for Samp these days -- he's made his impact more on PKs than on the regular field of play this season (unlike last). This match sort of proved two trends I've noticed thus far this year: Samp isn't what they were last season, and Siena has managed to tough out what looks like an even more suprisingly competitive club this year.

As for the goal of the weekend thus far, Chievo's Obinna pulled a nice set of moves that reminded of DP's goal last weekend. What is it with those crazy Nigerian forwards? ;)

Roma 1 - 1 Lazio
Totti 40 (R), Rocchi 58 (L)
Stadio Olimpico

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francesco Totti's opener was cancelled out by Tommaso Rocchi, as the points are shared in a fiery Derby della Capitale.

The Rome derby is always a passionate occasion, but it was increasingly tense for both sides. Roma were struggling badly going into this game with just eight points from seven rounds and fresh from defeats to 10-man Siena and Empoli. Coach Luciano Spalletti gambled with his goalkeeper and fielded Brazilian Doni on his Serie A debut, while Francesco Totti's wife Ilary was in the stands despite reports she'd gone into labour with their first son.

Lazio had won their last four games at the Stadio Olimpico and were the more confident going into this clash, playing Fabio Firmani and lifelong Roma fan Fabio Liverani in midfield with Paolo Di Canio partnering Tommaso Rocchi. However, there was a blow for the Biancocelesti, as Angelo Peruzzi suffered an injury in the warm-up and 41-year-old Marco Ballotta went in goal, as second choice Matteo Sereni is also sidelined.

Within the first 30 seconds Lazio had pushed their way into the penalty area with a challenge on Valon Behrami.

Totti was very close to breaking the deadlock on 12 minutes when he came sliding on to Rodrigo Taddei's low cross and the strike spun inches past the far post.

Daniele De Rossi unleashed a powerful shot that was smothered by Ballotta, but Leandro Cufre' was fortunate not to be booked for shoving Behrami in a cynical foul to cut off a counter-attack.

Fabio Liverani had the Olimpico on the edge of their seats with a free kick that went agonisingly close to the upright. On the half-hour mark Lazio thought they had broken through with Rocchi, but the referee halted the move for Di Canio's push on Cristian Chivu.

Vincenzo Montella squeezed his way through three defenders before Sebastiano Siviglia managed to clear, then from the throw-in Ballotta was quick to close down De Rossi's header.

A scuffle broke out after 35 minutes when Firmani clattered into Simone Perrotta, but the referee quickly restored calm. The Roma midfielder suffered a cut to his knee in the incident.

The deadlock was broken soon after, as Taddei threaded through for Totti to burst in from the left and he lifted the ball over Ballotta from a tight angle with the outside of his right foot to give Roma the lead. The captain had a very special celebration, putting the ball under his jersey in honour of his heavily pregnant wife, who is expected to give birth any day now.

Another scuffle broke out moments later, in particular between Di Canio and Mancini with Christian Panucci trying to keep the peace. Massimo Oddo's ambitious free kick was off target and later the full-back's low cross almost found Di Canio from six yards.

Into the second half and Roma maintained the initiative, Montella hooking down a searching pass and skipping round a defender before hitting the side-netting.

Lazio fought back with Rocchi, but both his shots in quick succession were charged down by Cristian Chivu. Liverani took a free kick quickly, but couldn't get his shot on target with Doni on the other side of the goal.

Delio Rossi tried to introduce more creativity with Ousmane Dabo in for Firmani. It certainly was an effective move, as moments later Lazio equalised with a well-worked goal. Cesar's cross from the left found the head of Tommaso Rocchi, who rose in front of Chivu to nod in.

The Biancocelesti poured forward soon after and nearly made it 2-1, but this time Cesar's cross was headed just off target by Behrami.

The game had sprung into life and was end to end stuff, as Dabo dived in to prevent Totti making the most of Oddo's defensive error on a Mancini centre.

Montella's shot from a Totti pass was charged down and Mancini's follow-up deflected over the bar with Ballotta left stranded. Olivier Dacourt came on for the not 100 per cent fit Perrotta in the Roma midfield, while Christian Manfredini replaced Cesar.

Ballotta was almost wrong-footed by a Taddei corner kick that was heading for the far post, but the tension was rising with a series of scuffles and Gianluca Paparesta was trying to calm Di Canio when an object - seemingly a coin - was thrown from the stands and struck the referee. The official assured everyone that there was nothing to worry about and continued play almost immediately.

A free kick into the box was nodded towards Di Canio at the back post, but the former Premiership star was offside. It was one of Di Canio's last touches of the ball before he made way for Goran Pandev, while Totti was struggling with cramp.

Totti's acrobatic volley on a poor defensive clearance was off target, then Shabani Nonda replaced the disappointing Montella upfront for Roma.

The Giallorossi had a great chance to restore their lead on 82 minutes when Chivu's free kick found Panucci for a powerful free header, but it was too central to really trouble Ballotta.

Soon after, Roma rattled the crossbar with what would've been an Oddo own goal, but the referee halted the move for De Rossi's foul. Taddei then took advantage of a defensive error, but was too selfish and aimed at goal from distance when he might've done better to set up Nonda.

Mancini dribbled past two players and saw his shot charged down, but Nonda wasted a golden opportunity to snatch the win in the final minute of normal time. The ex-Monaco man gathered Taddei's pass and found space between three defenders, but ballooned over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Actually, Jeeks forgot the part about him stuffing the ball in his shirt too.

People at the touch line were laughing so hard, you could hear it on air.

Roman rivals content with point Sunday 23 October, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luciano Spalletti, Delio Rossi and Paolo Di Canio all claim they are content with the point in the Rome derby and hope the fans will feel the same.

“We played well and the crucial thing was to see my team motivated and believing in its abilities,” said Giallorossi boss Luciano Spalletti after tonight’s 1-1 draw. “It’s a shame we let in that goal and became a little frightened for the following 15 minutes. We made some silly mistakes and allowed Lazio to take the initiative, but we created chances until the end and that is the right attitude.”

The strains of playing in the UEFA Cup in Norway on Thursday took its toll towards the end of the encounter.

“Some of our players had already done 90 minutes in the UEFA Cup on a frozen pitch, so physically they weren’t quite as fresh as the Lazio squad, but we still threatened and I was very happy with our performance tonight.”

Spalletti took a gamble by giving Brazilian goalkeeper Doni his Serie A debut in such a high-profile match.

“Doni did well in goal and impressed on his debut, but I feel I must point out that we are happy with Gianluca Curci this season and will evaluate the situation week to week.”

The Roma fans attended the training session this week with a banner that read: ‘Heaven or Hell – the choice is yours.’ Some supporters took their aggression too far during tonight’s match, as referee Gianluca Paparesta was struck by a coin.

“In such a passionate city, everyone feels they are a part of the derby, but there are always a few idiots who throw things. I think Paparesta was one of the best men on the field today. He kept the tension down and could easily have made it worse. I don’t know how the fans will react to this result, but I saw them encouraging us and that is very helpful,” noted Spalletti.

Over at Lazio, the atmosphere was also a mixture of upbeat feelings and regrets over a game both sides felt they could’ve won.

“We felt the tension of the event a little too much in the first half and Roma gave us problems on the break, but we adjusted a few things in midfield to restore the balance. With a bit more confidence, I think we would’ve won this match,” insisted Delio Rossi.

“Francesco Totti did well on the goal to get the final touch before Marco Ballotta could get there, as he anticipated his stride to turn in. Fabio Liverani played very well and if he was able to head the ball then he’d be almost a perfect player.”

Paolo Di Canio claimed he was proud of this result and thanked the supporters for pushing them to fight back after Francesco Totti’s opener.

“We always want to win, especially the derby, but considering how we reacted I think we proved that with these fans behind us, the team spirit and the Coach, we can achieve anything. In the first half we were tense and couldn’t express ourselves, so we were moving the ball around a little slowly and Roma played mainly on the counter-attack. Our strength emerged eventually and these fans taught us to never give in.”

Tommaso Rocchi had also scored in this fixture last season and has become a key striker for the Biancocelesti.

“Rocchi is a great player who has now fully absorbed the spirit of the Lazio Eagle, so we hope he’ll be with us for a long time to come,” concluded Di Canio.

Totti performed an intriguing celebration after his goal, putting the ball under his jersey and pushing it out as a tribute to his heavily pregnant wife, who was in the stands for this game.

“Francesco beat me to it and gave birth before I did!” laughed Ilary Blasi, who was rumoured to already be in labour today. “I wasn’t expecting that celebration, but it was a very sweet surprise. This will be a natural birth, so our son is the only one who can decide when to come into the world.”

Totti himself explained what it felt like to score in such curious circumstances. “I believed in this goal until the end and I really wanted to dedicate it to my wife and our baby. It’s an unfair result, as Roma did more than Lazio and deserved to win this game.”

Man I can't help it,but Totti doesn't cease to amuse me :D
