Israel is still holding hundreds of the 686 passengers they seized and took back to the Israeli port of Ashdod, where Grigoropoulos said he was kept incommunicado, denied access to a lawyer and made to sign papers he did not understand.

Grigoropoulos criticised "the wretched detention conditions at Ashdod (where) 500 people were packed in together" saying that "two Greek activists were beaten up" there by Israeli police.

"They made me sign papers on my expulsion, without me knowing what was on the papers because I did not have the right to a translator, a lawyer or to communicate with my family," he said.

The Eleftheri Mesogeio's captain, Zaharias Stilianakis, who was among those returned to Athens, said that "after their assault on the boat, the commandos cut all means of communication."

Another crew member, Aris Papadokostopoulos said that two of the detained Greeks "were beaten because they refused to give their digital fingerprints."

After storming the boat, the troops then "cut all forms of communication," Papadokostopoulos added.

Around 30 pro-Palestinian Greek activists from the flotilla are still being held in Israel.

Activists who have refused to identify themselves have been taken to an Israeli prison.

I got to say that some of the news is just weird. I read the same things on BBC and Belgian websites, which are trustworthy. But I don't understand why they would do such a thing, unless it's a matter of showing just how powerful they are. I think it might be the underlying idea: look what we can get away with. I see no other explanation TBH.

Imo the reason behind the harsh Israeli response is simple: Scaring anyone else wanting to convoy in anything into Gaza even it is humanitarian. If you see the activists as Hamas supporters, you could call that just a harsh response. If you see the activists as civilians, that's a textbook example of terrorism.

Generally speaking these are things that make sense in international politics. The initial reaction could be caused by all sorts of factors we don't know about. For example who ordered to open fire, was it a mistake by a soldier, by an officer, where did the order come from.. But the way they are taken away and treated right now is not something that is affected by these factors. It's the result of a decision and it serves a purpose. It is rational and if it's rational, there's a goal behind it all.

As you've said before 7, they don't give a shit what you or anyone else in the world thinks. They've got the international community's backing regardless of whatever the fuck they're doing and that's their only concern, they don't give a damn about protests, riots,..etc. They can live with that and bad publicity as long as they're not looked as an enemy from various international countries, they can live with that.

if by purpose you mean sending a message, then rest assured not one of us can decipher it. I was commenting on one's ability to make sense of those actions, as in actions carried by individuals driven by civilized and ethical motives. have you heard of Finkelstein?

Do you know that info was leaked that Israel had nuclear weapons already in the 70s?

Disgraceful, that no sanctions were made against Israel.

The US goverment is really hypocritical. Invading Iraq based on dubious photo, and helping Israel at the same time.

It is not just Bush, I am certain that the US foreign policy is led by a small group of (mostly Israel) people all the way from the 70s onward. If US are the leading world democracy, we truly live in a sad sad world.

JF Kennedy tried to investigate it and got a bullet in his head. It seems later presidents understood their message.
