Alex talks set to restart Wednesday 29 August, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rumours suggest that Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero is ready to sign a new contract with the Bianconeri.

It has been a surprising summer of negotiations within the Juve camp with agreements found with David Trezeguet, Pavel Nedved and Mauro Camoranesi, but not with the talismanic Del Piero.

Talks broke down in July when the 32-year-old refused to accept a pay cut and accused the Bianconeri of ‘showing a lack of respect.’

The situation has intensified after Juve boss Claudio Ranieri substituted Pinturricchio during the Livorno game and hasn’t picked him in the squad for Wednesday night’s Coppa Italia encounter with Parma.

“I respect the hierarchy at the club, but I have to think of everyone,” Ranieri insisted when asked by journalists whether there was a personal rift between the two men.

Stefano Del Piero – Alex’s brother and agent – is reportedly ready to schedule a meeting with the Old Lady’s general manager Jean-Claude Blanc within the next week.

Del Piero Contract Talks Set To Begin

Alessandro Del Piero's contractual dispute rages on - but it seems that he's been coaxed back to the table. The Juventus legend broke off negotiations with the club hierarchy in recent weeks, failing to resolve the issue of a proposed pay cut, but now, things may be worked out...

Sources within Italy have speculated that Alessandro Del Piero is now loser than ever to signing a new Juventus contract.

There have been at least two rounds of negotiations so far, but recently things have taken a turn for the worse with the Pinturicchio refusing to accept a pay cut.

Branding the proposal a "lack of respect" from the Old Lady hierarchy, his agent, brother Stefano Del Piero, withdrew from discussions.

However, he is now set to return to the table within the next seven days - despite rumours of his falling out of favour with coach Claudio Ranieri.

The ex-Parma boss took over at Juve earlier this summer and has recently moved Del Piero down the pecking order. The player was substituted during his side's 5-1 mauling of Livorno, and will not play in the (admittedly minor) Coppa Italia match tonight.

This Del Piero will look on from the sidelines as Juve take on Ranieri's former club, the Ducali.

However, Ranieri dismisses that the player has in any way fallen out of favour. Indeed, he argues the opposite.

"We're protecting our captain, because he's far too important. He won't be able to play in all our games this season.

"I'd rather see less of Del Piero in order to get the whole Del Piero," he added.

Indeed, Alex is on the verge of turning 33, adding credence to Ranieri's claim. Above all, squad rotation in the Coppa Italia is far from uncommon.

Juve have not won the competition since 1995, two years after all-time leading goalscorer Del Piero joined the club.
