@ bianconero: u cant really ignore or miss del piero's name as one of the greatest players in the world not just with juventus. i agree if it was 'ntfor his injury in 1998 he would've been sth else but he still is a world class player despite his injury.
i personally think del piero is unfortunate with the national side, in 98 he was injured, in 2002 trapatonni made wierd choices and we all know who scored italy's goal against mexico if u forgot then here is a reminder it was del pieros's header, if it was 'nt for him italy would'nt have qualified to the next round. besides at one piont del piero was the best player in the world end of story..

Injury can make the difference between Greatness and being very good: in DP's case it did, alas.
I can not lie, as grateful to the many times I saw him play for us in the Alpi: he was never the best. In fact, I am trying to think of a time when he was for Juventus: for a long period.

he has not been a regular starter for the azzurri for 6 years...regardless of their performance players like Zizou, Thuram , Makelele even Pauleta always started for their respective NTs...how do u expect any player to perform when he goes into a game knowing he will be a bit-part player? I still don't understand the criticism Alex is getting. In my opinion, in the his whole career the only moment where you could've criticise Alex is for missing the chance against France in Euro2000 final. 1 game in his whole career where the team needed him and he couldn't put the ball behind the net. You cannot blame him for losing either, because if it wasn't for sloppy deffending the match could've ended 1-0 infavour of Italy.
He led Juve to winning many titles and just to show how effetive he is in 1998-1999 season when he got injured Juve finished 7th. And in 2003-2004 when he missed most of the season Juve finished 3rd while in the 4 season (2 before and 2 after) Juve won the scudetto. I am not saying that he single handedly won us the trophies but no sane person can deny that he is one of the major if not the most major effective player in all seasons he played for Juve.
You are talking about a player who has scored 199 goals for one of the biggest clubs in history not counting goals that took place in friendly matches.
I seriously do not think that Del Piero would have been different if he hadn't got injured that year. It just simply showed the streangth and manhood inside him. Almost all spectators said he would never return back, surprise surprise, Statistics speak for themselves Del Piero scored more goals and assisted more after injury than before.
It is cruel not say that he is one of the greatest in history after all that he has done.
He is an excellent goal scorer/striker and 199 goals speak for themselves..
He is an terrific assitent striker just ask Pippo and David about it.
He is an outstanding sportsman, just ask anyone who watched Juve play under Capello.
He is THE BEST captain, ask any player who played with him.
Hs is The most loyal, just ask any true juventini. Immediately annoucing that he is staying with the club for better and for worse and not waiting for the verdict to come out.
Personally if I wanted to name a player in history to let all players to look upto; Alessandro Del Piero will be the one. A true example of the perfect football player.

who is bashing del piero for his performances for juventus?his juventus career has been phenomenal and he deserves all the accolades that he gets from people as far as his juventus career is concerned.

I don't think his Career at NT was bad. Infact whenever he got the chance he delivered (beside euro2000 final).
Euro qualifier + euro 96 => alex did not score but played well especially in the qualifiers where he played 3-4 goals.

WC 1998 he might not have scored but he assisted and played really well.

WC2002: Was left on the bench. Entered in the mexico game and scored the qualifier. Played the next game against Korea which Italy was leading and he was putting a great performance. Once he left the pitch italy lost.

Euro 2004: Was left in the bench for Totti who should that he is not worthy for starting 11 role. Del Piero took over. Carried Italy on his shoulder till Trap thought it was best to take him off in the sweden game and gave it all away.
