So in the latest Stampa interview, Blanc gave some comments about the renewal. In a nutshell:
- 4million is a lot for a 33 years old, but the contract is about sporting performances and commercial ones. "Now we can call big companies in Italy, China or the USA and talk directly with them about Buffon and Del Piero.

- Not Del Piero, but the team won in the end; Juve won.

- We did not give any technical guarantees. Alex is smart enough to know how to play the best on the field.

- Also the supporters know we have a budget to respect. Thus we can work wothour heart but also wth our head. We are managers.

- The economical aspect was a major issue, as always in this kind of contracts.

Blanc: Del Piero Is Number One In Italy

Juventus director-general Jean-Claude Blanc has explained the reasons behind renewing Alessandro Del Piero’s contract and says that the Golden Boy is the number one of Italian football.

Del Piero finally put pen to paper earlier this week on a new deal until 2010, after months of fractious negotiations with the club.

Some sections of the Italian media have questioned whether the €4m a year that Del Boy is now earning is a little too much for a player who turns 33 next month.

“With Del Piero we came up with a special contract for a special player,” said Blanc.

“It is not only an agreement over his service for this sport, but also to develop his and our image in other countries as well as commercial development.

“Del Piero is the number one in Italian football. When you speak about Juventus to the Americans or the Chinese or the Italians, the names that come up are always Del Piero and Buffon.”

Del Piero made his debut for Juventus way back in 1993 and has since gone on to make more than 500 appearances, becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer in the process.

Blanc boasts of Del Piero bargain

Juventus director general Jean-Claude Blanc believes Alessandro Del Piero’s contract renewal was a “bargain,” and that they won’t sell rebel Tiago Mendes.

Although the captain has accepted a 20 per cent pay cut, he will still earn £3.1m per season until 2010.

“The deal with Del Piero was a special agreement for a special player. It is also an innovative contract, as it is not only for his performances on the field, but also a partnership for marketing his image in new areas,” explained Blanc.

“Alex is the number one of Italian football. We can talk about big American companies, Chinese or Italian, discussing Juve, Gigi Buffon and Del Piero. As I said, it is an innovative portfolio.”

The negotiations dragged on for months and at one stage director of sport Alessio Secco had warned they could “lose” Del Piero. So did Alex win that battle?

“It would be a mistake to put it that way. Juve won, as did the team and the club. Our objective was to make the side stronger and we achieved that. We have never signed a contract we didn’t want to, nor have we given any guarantees of first team football.”

The Bianconeri have also had tricky negotiations with Buffon, David Trezeguet, Mauro Camoranesi and Pavel Nedved over the past few months, prompting some of the fans to turn against the administration.

“As a club we have the same will as the fans – the desire to find a balance. The majority see it the same way we do, as they know we have a budget to respect. The heart can speak, but also hear.”

Juve have just returned from a year in Serie B, but are in the thick of the Scudetto battle going into Sunday night’s game with Genoa.

“It would be arrogant to say I wasn’t positively surprised by our start to the season. This mixture of youngsters and experience works, especially as we have a Coach who puts the ingredients together like a Michelin four-star chef.”

However, one bad egg in the kitchen is Tiago, who caused controversy this week when he threatened to leave in January if he wasn’t given more first team football.

“I think he can still be a good ingredient,” mused Blanc. “There is a lot of competition for places and so I look at the positive side of this situation – Antonio Nocerino is doing very well and our decision to keep him was a smart one.

“I would wait a few months before making any judgments on players. It is going to be a long season.”
