I don't think he'll be out for as long as two weeks. It was a slight thigh strain AFAIK and at one point in time it seemed as though he might recover in time for the Belarus match. If he isn't in the squad for the Empoli game he'll probably be ready to sit on the bench for Cap against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Del Piero has to be in the squad in Germany, he's the perfect substitute due to his versatility.
Yes, his ability to operate in various roles is definitely useful. I think that the fact that Del Piero can provide width on the left hand side of the field might tempt Lippi to include him ahead of let's say Montella or Iaquinta.

However, I don't think even Lippi will call Del Piero if he sits on the bench for the majority of the season, it just wouldn't be fair to guys like Esposito, Di Michele and Lucarelli who are doing very well for their respective clubs.

Me and Stuart are both saying he will be a substitute.
Yeah, no doubt about it. It would take an absolute miracle for DP to make the starting XI in Germany. The only way that could possibly happen is if both Totti and Cassano suffer injuries and even if that happened DP wouldn't be guaranteed a first team spot.
