French is indeed more difficult. But you can use it in countries like Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, thats a whole lot better than being able to use a language in south/central american countries.

There are a lot of "older" people speaking French as a second language though.

so? spanish is by far more useful both in its proximity to portuguese and italian and the number of people who speak it

martin is right if the intent is fluency, but if you take up classes for a year you will defo get enough to communicate.

It really just depends on where you plan to spend your time. If you're living in the US then Spanish seems a lot more useful. In Europe they are equally useful.
