On a more serious note, I have never encountered problems with bureacracy. I think we're rather average on that issue. So no worries there.

What you should be prepared for however, is the awful, awful, awful wheather we get in Belgium. You might think that's something that doesn't bother you that much, but over the years it has become one of the reasons I want to try to live abroad.

As for Brussels, I think it's a city you either love or hate. It's a cultural melting pot and lately it seems racial issues are hot in Belgian politics. Not that blatant racism is tolerated, but you'd expect more from Europe's heart.

I'm gonna look into some Belgian universities now. I guess they close applications pretty soon. Do you guys know how I apply?
I'm only looking for universities in Brussels. I'm looking for a university with science programs, which one would you recommend?

All depends what you see as a bad climate, if you hate rain, don't come to belgium, we have plenty of that here, if you want to run away from the Scandinavian cold, then you can come to belgium, we don't have much days in the winter with temperatures less then 0 degrees (day temperatures that is).
At the moment, it is 15 degrees or more, but I have to admit, that is an exception.

To apply to the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, you can find all the info about that university here:

    http://www.ulb.ac.be/homepage_uk.html

Then you have the KU (Katholieke universiteit):

    http://www.kubrussel.ac.be/english/index.htm

And you have the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel):

    http://www.vub.ac.be/english/index.php

Maybe you can check them out and see if one likes you better then another.

I think the Libre is the French speaking one, and the Vrije is the Dutch speaking one, but since I ain't from Bruxelles and haven't followed university there (or anywere else for that matter), I can't guaruentee that.

I was under the impression that the Vrije/Libre institutions were founded as a response to the Catholic/Christian based schools, to give people an option where they wouldn't have to be bound by religious beliefs. Thus I find it strange that there are two schools called that, if both are trying [were trying] to accomplish the same thing. Maybe Geof can explain.

I've longed to move away from my country for a long time. As stated in another thread I would like to move to USA. Not an easy issue, moving within Europe is a completely different thing though.
My aim is right now at Belgium. It's far and close enough from Sweden and has a better climate than here. More important is that the European Union headquarter is there. I love politics and in Brussels I would have all the possibilites to be a part of it.

So does anyone live in Belgium and could share their experiences on how it's like. I've heard that they have awful bureaucracy and too few roads for too many cars.
I guess what I would first like to do is to study in Belgium. What university would you recommend?
If you have some other thoughts or information, please share it.
Belgium is a good place to live. I'm Belgian myself, and have lived there for my whole life, except this year.
The climate is OK. I mean we do get a lot of rain, but at least you won't freeze your balls off, and it doesn't get too hot in the summer.
People are quite friendly, and quite open to foreigners.

The Universities are quite good here. In fact I do believe they're better than German or French uni's.
I'd recommend ULB if you plan to come in Brussels. It's a French speaking uni, but i'm sure you can find plenty of things in English.
KUL is also a very good one. Located in the nice student-city of Leuven, only 30km frop Brussels, so you can live in the capital.
UGent is also good as far as I know, and the city (Ghent) is really great.

If you have other questions, don't hesitate.

The best science-uni in Brussels is the ULB which would suit you as you speak french.
Don't worry too much about deadlines, normally you can sign up until October or November. Unless you're post-graduating? Check the site i'd say: http://www.ulb.ac.be

And tuition in Belgium is kept quite low. Depending on the uni you'd pay 500-800€ a year. That doesn't include books & materials however.

Really? That really is an issue as I'm actually fleeing from bad climate. :undecide:
Well at least we have daylight in the winter and we have few days of snow. And today the weather is great. About 15-18°C, and not a cloud since 5-6 days!

Partly, yes. In Fact, when Belgium became independent in 1830, Brussels had no university. Ghent, Leuven and Liege had famous uni's but nothing in Brussels. It is a masonic group that founded the ULB in 1834.

Nowadays, the Uni is still quite anti-clerical, and it is known that a lot of the professors are members of masonic groups.

Thus I find it strange that there are two schools called that, if both are trying [were trying] to accomplish the same thing. Maybe Geof can explain.
Well. Everything exists in double in Belgium today. Both the VUB/ULB and UCL/KUL used to be one uni, but in 1969, flemish students kicked the french speaking students out of Leuven (where the KUL is). The walloons then built a french UCL, 30 km from Leuven, just over the "linguistic border".
    The same happened in Brussels.

Today however, ULB and VUB share more facilities and have enhanced cooperation. This is a kind of response to the movement of French speaking catholic universities to merge. (The smaller unis of FUCAM (Mons), FUNDP (Namur) and Saint-Louis (Brussels) will merge with the much bigger UCL).

You seem to intentionally ignore what I tell you as I mentioned earlier that Belgium is not an upgrade from Scandinavia in terms of climate.
I'm sorry. I did notice you said that, but it just got lost among all the other replies. When another person said the same thing it gave more emphasis, so don't take it personal. I appreciate your help a lot.

By the way which place has the most rain, Brussels or Gothenburg?

A question about the school system in Belgium:

Do you first apply to a bachelor program and then apply for the masters program. Or can you apply for the five years of a master right away?
