Cannavaro and Grosso does not equal success after the last seasons they had in Real and Lyon before joining us. We usually don't do these kind of signings, they've always said that they want player for the long term of this "project".

Based on their last season(s) at their respective clubs it is indeed a weird thing to think.
Based on their performances / results with the Italian NT it's not so weird. Italy did qualify fairly easy for the WC.

I was never pro signing Canna anyway (Grosso was bit of a question mark to me, could turn out great, could turn out terrible), but I can understand the reasoning behind it, as a short term solution.
