Buffon: Transfer fees 'inconsiderate'
Gianluigi Buffon is the most expensive goalkeeper in history, but even he feels “uncomfortable” with the sums Real Madrid are shelling out.
The world transfer record was shattered twice in one week when the Spaniards paid £60m for Kaka and £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo.
“We need to stop this endless rush towards multi-million pound spending in football,” slammed the Juventus goalkeeper.
“When Juve paid £30m for me in 2001, there was an era of plenty, but now there is a global financial crisis. Circumstances have changed.
“Football is played on a Sunday, then over the rest of the week you walk around and see the difficulties people are having.
“I confess in those circumstances I feel uncomfortable. One needs a bit of morality in everything, but sums like that are inconsiderate.”
Buffon is also moved by this debate during the Confederations Cup in South Africa, a nation that has experienced great hardship.
There is news that Nelson Mandela should be in the stands for the opening match of the tournament between South Africa and Iraq.
“He is a man who made history, changed a country and his influence went beyond the borders of South Africa. His message changed our society and the way we see things.
“It is wonderful seeing what this tournament represents for a country that until 20 years ago was suffering under Apartheid. It means there is a future for everyone.”

Yes and I can’t but be happy about this. It is a sign that Juventus is doing well and this gives me hope for the future».
Before thinking of the future however, that is of that which awaits him and his mates as from July, there is the Confederations Cup to play for. Strong from the title of World Champions, the azzurri want to have their say. «I am happy with the victory obtained on our debut against the USA. The American team is one that showed it can compete with the strongest teams and did not do badly against us either. No we are about to play against Egypt which deserves all our respect and not only for what it was capable of doing against Brazil. It is a team that plays well, is fast and has great individual skills. They are the African champions and there must be a reason for this. They will make us suffer but with the right compactness and the will to suffer which are typical of us we will manage to overcome them».
Compactness and a will to suffer have always been the characteristics of Marcello Lippi’s teams. The usual united group capable of facing and overcoming any difficulty and even a few attacks from the outside to which Buffon answered in this manner: «We answered back to those who were not happy with this group. Our coach knows how to manage everything in the best of manners, launching youngsters at the right moment and this happened again this time. Three years after the victory of the world championships one could not and should not dismantle the team which was the protagonist of that feat. I am more then convinced that this group can give even more, now in the Confederations Cup and then in the next qualification matches for the world cup. This is why it deserves much respect and a bit more gratitude. Many have forgotten that if the Italian football movement has something to give it is mostly thanks to us».

Buffon: What youngsters?

Gigi Buffon insists that throwing youngsters into the Giro Azzurro will not magically solve the national side’s problems.
The Azzurri lost 3-0 to Brazil last night, a defeat which saw their Confederations Cup campaign terminate and add weight to the suggestion that the side is too old to compete at the highest level.
However, the Juventus goalkeeper is unconvinced that Italy have enough quality youngsters who are ready to jump up to the highest level.
“There is a desire and the hope that our younger players can take a step up to give us a hand,” said the No 1.
“However, you have to realise that playing in the national shirt during these games is a lot different from playing in the League at home. It isn’t easy because you need experience and personality.
“Added to that, I don’t see a lot of youngsters around who can take the baton, perhaps because our domestic championship has become more modest and less competitive in recent years.”
When asked about the Inter duo of Davide Santon, who was at the Confederations Cup but didn’t play a minute, and Mario Balotelli, Gigi responded: “Santon picked up a muscle problem in training.
“As for Balotelli, he can’t be everywhere at once and for now he is with the Under-21 international set up.”
Instead of experimenting on some fresh legs, boss Marcello Lippi again focused on the World Cup block of players but all they collected was a win over 10-man America and defeats to Egypt and Brazil.
“It was right that we were knocked out,” Buffon added. “We are in a delicate moment where we are not competitive.
“When we press our opponents and give everything then we are a great team, but without those characteristics we are vulnerable.
“We hope this terrible showing helps us for the future.”
