Sacchi: Golden Ball To Maradona Of Goalkeepers
"If he doesn't win, when will a keeper of defender ever do it? There's no one like him."
These days, after the list of 50 nominees for the Golden Ball was released, everyone from players to press journalists to coaches had something to say about the prestigious award. Arrigo Sacchi has very clear ideas on the issue and wrote about it on La Gazzetta Dello Sport: "I've always thought that to win the Golden Ball you need to have great talent, technical ability and physical strength. Then when you win something important like a Champions League, a World Cup or European Cup, your chances obviously increase. Gigi Buffon was a great protagonist of last season. I think all the Azzurri players would deserve a Golden Ball: they achieved something extraordinary. But, objectively, I think nobody is more talented than this incredible athlete who never has an off game."
"I've known Buffon a long time: he was destined for success. When Parma sold him they asked me what I thought about it. I said Juventus had made a great deal: they got the Maradona of goalkeepers. Buffon in goal means having many more points than you deserve at the end of a season. I have respect and admiration for other great champions who would deserve this trophy. Like Cannavaro and Zidane: I've worked with them at Parma and at Madrid. Then there is Henry, the brilliant Arsenal striker. Eto'o, Ronaldinho, and Deco are the aces of the great Barcelona. Then, Kaká, Makelele, Drogba, Lampard, Essien, etc. But if Buffon doesn't win today, when will a defender or goalkeeper ever make it? There is no one like him."
