Juventus No 1 Gigi Buffon has discussed his injury situation and nominated a surprise contender to inherit the Italian goalkeeping throne.
Buffon was answering readers' questions for Gazzetta.it and he covered a variety of issues starting with his current fitness problems.
“I've had a tear in my adductor and it's partly my own fault,” he explained.
“I had already felt a pain when I tried to rush myself back to play against Palermo when the team were having some problems.
“Things got worse and I found myself with a hole in my adductor, which is slowly recovering. That's why I won't be back until January.”
The ex-Parma man was also asked to discuss how close he came to joining Milan in 2006.
“I am very bound to Juventus and from the moment I agreed to stay after relegation I felt part of a project,” he said.
“The new directors often talk to us players, especially with the old guard. Now I could never play for another Italian team except for Genoa, who I am a big fan of
“But I can confirm that I was close to Milan but then I decided I wouldn't move.
“I didn't feel right with my conscience and I need to be calm to do my best. These considerations wouldn't have come up had Juventus stayed in Serie A and there were other things that weren't going right.
“However, if a team offered £40m for me now, I would be the first to say they should sell me.
“I love Juve and with that sum of money they could galvanise the squad.”
While the Old Lady have put together an impressive run in Serie A, Buffon believes Europe could be the ideal stage for a Bianconeri triumph.
“I think our best chance is in the Champions League,” he claimed.
“We have a mixture of solidarity and experience with the quality needed to make the difference. We showed that in the game against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
“As for the Scudetto, Inter and Milan have more quality and the Rossoneri don't have the Champions League, which can take points away from you in the spring.”
Buffon concluded by maintaining that Italy isn't facing a goalkeeping crisis and he suggested some custodians who could follow in his footsteps.
“It's not true that there aren't any good young goalkeepers in Italy - people just need to have more faith in them,” he stressed.
“Marco Amelia, Gianluca Curci and Antonio Mirante are good, but my favourite is Federico Marchetti at Cagliari - he has a great career ahead of him.”
