I think he means they don’t really run anything and are just figureheads, kind of like how the UK still has a queen. I think a lot of countries in Western Europe have them, they’re just useless celebrities so we don’t hear of them.
He said monarchists, so I meant in the sense where people were militant about defending their interests. I think people mostly like the history and mythology around them. There are also minority monarchist parties in several European countries where the monarchy was abolished, such as Italy and Russia. But the majority are clearly not in support of it.

For me, in a country where young people idolise the Kardashians and other domestic, vapid, reality TV "celebrities", removing the monarchy from their celebrity status is not a high priority. Most of the time they are really boring.
