Ranieri calls for calm Monday 6 August, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri insists that the Bianconeri’s pre-season preparations are on schedule.

The Cadetti champions have struggled in pre-season and have picked up two defeats and a draw as the new-look side is yet to gel.

With enormous Press scrutiny ahead of the Old Lady’s return to Serie A the pressure is evident, but Ranieri sees early loses as inevitable teething problems.

“The set-backs that we have encountered were to be expected,” the ex-Parma tactician insisted. “In order to grow you need weaknesses to emerge early on so you can address them.“

The main focus of recent criticisms has been the defence which has looked disorganised and uneasy at times.

“It’s just normal that the defence will take a while to get used to each other,” Ranieri continued.

“The midfield needs to help more with the defending as when Tiago Mendes and Sergio Almiron play together in the middle of the park they both have a tendency to go forward.

“Against Hamburg I asked Antonio Nocerino and Cristiano Zanetti to cover more and the result was immediately evident.”

Juve must now prepare for the Birra Moretti trophy on August 8 where they will face Napoli and Inter in 45-minute matches.

----------------------------

Discouraging that it took this long to realize that Tiago and Almiron in the CM is a problem. Encouraging that he finally realizes this.

Discouraging that he hasn't tried Grygera at RB and plays down the defensive problems. Encouraging that there is still a few more friendlies to be played.

C'mon Ranieri... please don't prove me right.

I wonder when it will be time to panic. We have played 3 matches so far against a Newcastle side that are not going anywhere in the premiership and we conceded an early goal albeit a dubious penalty but still lost 2-0. Excuse: They are ahead of us in fitness.

Then we went to hamburg and got beat 1-0 to a side that should have been relegated from the Bundesliga last season but managed to survive. Excuse: they are ahead of us in preparations. Then we go to Sunderland and lose a goal in the first 5 minutes, and only manage to draw 1-1 with a side that has just come from the championship but again the excuse is we are behind in fitness.

1 goal against 3 pretty average sides, fitness or not is not good enough.
But it seems as long as Inter is losing too, everything is okay. do not even start to compare juventus situation with Inter's as we are not in the same boat. It is okay for them to lose as they know their team.

It is not okay for a new era with players and managers to continually lose against ordinary sides as it does not breed confidence. I am not even seeing any kind of pattern in our game.

Someone even said we are entertaining. Entertaining? How? Salihamidic had a nightmare on the right hand side against Sunderland. Nocerino whom, I was led to belive is a central midfielder of the spoiling mode did better than him on the right.

All the games I have seen Tiago has been crap and Almiron was bad against Sunderland, i don't know what game you guys were watching. They did not look unfit to me just not good enough but hopefully its a 1 off

Nedved was good against sunderland, Dp was way too slow and indecisive but thats more fitness than anything. Iaquinta is lively but decision making is not his forte as yet. Trez was lively to and with sharpness, he would get better.

Chiellini and palladino seem up for it and I am still not sure why Palladino is not starting instead of Iaquinta unless of cos Iaquinta is a definite starter for us next season.

Defence, now that is a big joke at the moment as the right back situation is a mess, Grygera does not seem like a centreback but I was impressed with Milinaro, goal apart. Andrade was okay but nothing to be particularly pleased about. Buffon is in for along season if we do not make alterations at the back.

Just my 2 cents but we need reinforcements, fitness or not, our midfield is not seriea material, well not if you want to qualify for CL, we need 1 0r 2 players in there as we pale quite badly compared to what Inter, Roma, Milan and perhaps Fiorentina can boast of.

Defence, well you don't need to be Einstein to work out that we need a right back and perhaps andother centre back

P.s What exactly is the plan for Leggrottaglie and Boumsong as they do not seem to be getting a chance at all?
Exactly what I've been saying and thinking

I'm not so concerned about winning pre-season games as I am about how well we play in them, and frankly, we've sucked !!

My guess is for Andrade, and Grygera's still playing centrally.
Grygera Andrade
Is a world class duo

BUT,
i still think that grygera is better on the left
And they don't speak the same language (except English but i don't think they can English that good)

i was reading some posts and i have to say people who are bad mouthing Serie A should just stop watching it and go watch the premiership if its so great

first of all last year was the worst year because all Inters competion had point penalties, obviously there is going to be no competion when Milan, Roma, and Fiorentina start at negative numbers plus Juve wasnt even in the leauge

If English teams are so great why can't they compete in Europe? what have Chelsea, Man U and Arsenal won lately besides an English title, the only team that comes close is Liverpool. I don't care if Inter or roma r shit in Europe we have Milan and soon Juve

UEFA cup dosent even matter because the italian teams dont focus on it the coaches even say it in interviews

who won European and World player of the year Cannavaro, an italian player not an english, french or brazilian, besides Italy won the world cup last year and Mian won the champs leauge so italians pretty much owned calcio this year, also Totti won the golden boot award this year too

Serie A is still considered one of the hardest leauges in europe, so ppl who like to bring the leauge down can say whatever they want because its their opinion but this is mine

i was thinking about this, the reason for alot of the premierships successs is FOREIGN investment. to me when i see all this shit on the news of these foreign buyer just buying clubs they didnt really care about before they decided to buy a club (thakshin sinawatra he was a liverpool fan!). to me theres just money in EPL no passion or history from the people higher up.

:agree: totally agree with you

as long as we're winning wc's and putting a strong front in europe like we have for years and juve winning titles, thats all that really matters
i agree 100% :D

which is why serie A is a league i can be proud to support, a league that has kept its identity and herritage, clubs are being thrashed tv deals and dodgey investors laundering money bringing into foreign trash, im proud that italy despite being beaten and battered by the media and pundits alike b4 the world cup turned around and stuck their middle finger and defied the world and brought back what is rightfully ours, best of all sticking it to fifa. Im proud of the fact that italy is the only league that doesnt have any foreign managers in the top flight and has the least number of foreign imports out of all the european leagues. I love the colour, passion and noise of the italian game, not the family day out on a saturday afternoon with a fat greasy pie and a pint at half time that i see in england. To me the epl wants to be like italy, thats why they are thrashing all this money about, but italy will continue to outproduce quality and reign europe and the world for years to come

I hope italy continue to do so , but i worry all this corruption and scandals will affect the league like it has last year , apart form milan doing excellent in the champions league , there really wasnt too many positive things . Roma , a team that finished second in the italian league lost 7-1 to an obviously better man united side . In the uefa cup , italian teams were nowhere to be seen . Juventus , the most successful team in italian football was relegated to serie B . If more scandals arise in italy and more teams are affected then obviously the serie A can only get worse , and i fear this will happen eventually . There is obviously many missing pieces in the calciopoli puzzle and they might be found very soon.

I am a proud supporter of serie A because of the reasons you have stated , the serie A has stuck to its tradition and proud history , unlike the premiership that is controlled by the russian mafia .

The funny thing is , at the darkest year of italian football , they have managed to win the worl cup and champions league therefore making this year the most successful year for italy in a long long time .

Perhaps you're right, even though I did watch every match those seasons barring the Serie B stint. But still, he's not a freekick specialist. One goal a season on freekicks isn't very impressive and even our other freekicks were not up to par in my opinion.
Oh, I agree with your initial point. But Del Piero's definitely not poor at taking free kicks. He's just not a true specialist.
