Yes the Contributors group is there to show that you've contributed with some money and you get some other perks like you can set a custom username color for example and with the special contributors banner below the username. I'll setup some other perks later. It is too much work to do it all manually (the donations that is) so I've setup an add-on that allows user upgrades from your User CP:

As for that error, I would start by reinstalling Chrome completely. There are a few more suggestions here:

I'll check the link as well. could it be because I'm still on Windows XP and Chrome receive no more updates?
sometimes when someone quotes me i dont get a notification and it doesent show up among the other Alerts when i press "show all...". like for example yesterday when Gagi quoted me here:

Yes it happens sometimes, not looked into why it does that yet.
Edit: Could be this perhaps:
"There can be various reasons why alerts for mentions aren't received. If someone is watching a thread, they won't receive a mention alert as the new reply alert 'overrides' this. If someone is quoted and tagged, they'll get an alert for the quote and not the tag. If a post is edited and a tag is added afterwards, no alert will be sent. If someone tags say 10 people and the user group tagging permission is set to say 5, then only 5 people will get the tag alerts. "
