Here are screen shots of my 4-2-3-1. This is the setup and instructions I use in a majority of games. You will need a very good striker to make this work, one who can play CF role, has strong technical and physical attributes to contribute to build up and capable of scoring a majority of your goals. Higuain, Belotti, Berardi and especially Kean have all managed to play this role successfully for me. The inside forward will need to be a capable finisher as well.
Have your GK distribute the ball to the fullbacks, your fullbacks will have to be technical, capable of getting forward frequently and running with the ball so they can be the link that takes the ball out of your defensive third forward without just giving away possession. At least one of your CBs should be a capable passer as well. This system is at risk for picking up a lot of fouls but there are ways you can mitigate this. Your two CMs have to be good decision makers, their morale kept high and in a proper state mentally or they will pick up cards constantly and all four of your attacking players should be set to ease off tackles.
I play this setup for all my home games and also for away games against weaker opposition. When playing away against opposition that is decent or have a lot of players high up the pitch I will get rid of "Prevent short gk distribution" and change closing down from "more" to "sometimes" to avoid committing too many fouls
I also occasionally play a counter attacking mentality in away games. This I use rarely, only reserved for very tough away games. With this setup I use two wingers and no Inside FW.
I leave my player instructions pretty much the same as attacking except I change my fullbacks from "get further forward" to "hold position"
With this setup I have played eight seasons winning the Serie A, Coppa Italia and Italian supercup every year. I have been to the Champions League final five times and won three of them. I could have won more CLs but Manchester United is a monster in my save game and theyve knocked me out of the CL on several occasions. They've bought some of the best players in the world combined with insane youth players the game has created for them, I think they are the only team in the game right now that can actually beat me over a two leg tie. My CL campaigns of late have all been decided by when I inevitably face them.
