Nice man! Yeah I can imagine he was great. Was he a wingback back then as well? I could imagine he was talented enough to play winger or something? You're never really in doubt when you watch a truly talented player, right?
He has always been a LB who is very inclined to play as a winger. In Brazil we almost never use 3 CBs, so wingback he never played here. However, the guy is absolutely talyor made for the LWB position. He would be absolutely perfect in that position.
About spotting talent, don't know if trolling or ironic, but I'll go for it and yes, I have a good idea after the few first touches. And a lot of times I fuck it up lol.
For example, Fabinho from Monaco. That kid was signed to play for Fluminense youth a few years ago and was part of the team that got the final of the most important U19 tournament of the country. He played as a RB. He was just a complementary player on that team, having just arrived from another one, and he would fuck up a lot of times. He actually looked a bit clumsy on the ball.
Right after that tournament they sold him to a group of agents (if he didnt come via that group before) and they somehow managed to put the guy in Real Madrid B. It was pretty weird because he absolutely had no portfolio for a move like that. But he took his chances and today his biggest trait seems to be his IQ, something I couldnt notice at the time (also because he played exclusively as a RB, where the movement is more automatic).
But when it comes to Fluminense talent, I'm usually right. The twins Fabio and Rafael (Man utd) had a lot of hype here, but I knew they wouldnt mount to nothing special. It really baffled me to see Sir Alex had that huge crush on Rafael, letting him play a damn CL final. Of course he would fuck up.
Gerson is another kid whose sale was baffling. 16M is absurd for him. He's got too much slow feet to be anywhere near an AM. He's actually too slow feet to play almost anywhere on the pitch. And his stamina is shit, his movement is awful. But he was very hyped and is indeed a guy with a different vision of the pitch and a great left foot.
If he manages to improve his workrate, his moving, his stamina and his defending, I can see him as a good LCM. But it's a big questionmark, as he is far and away to being worth 16M as only a 18 yr old South American phenomenon would be worth.
Same with Kenedy in Chelsea. He is a good player, very useful sometimes, but not really special. He's some kind of tweener between CF and winger, and the fact he's very limited with his right foot is a big issue. I could see future for him as a mobile CF though, if he's intelligent enough to position himself.
Now Fluminense loaned Marlon (CB) to Barcelona B and he's already made the CL list. That guy has clear high end talent on the ball. Very calm, ball playing CB, suits perfectly for Barcelona. They will buy him for 6 or 7M - peanuts. However, his actual defending skills are still unclear, specially positioning/concentration. But he's worth the gamble.
Our current good youngsters are Gustavo Scarpa (AM) and Douglas (LCM), I've talked about them before.
Scarpa has an amazing left foot. He's done a lot more after this video. Basically half Fluminense goals are either scored or created by him, and actually most of chances created start from his feet. Spetacular left foot, very mobile, quick, great work rate, very good passing and vision, is also a dependable player. Very constant. He works very hard on the pitch and his performance only drops when he's clearly tired.
I don't see him as having potential to be good enough to be a starter at Juve, but good enought to be a starter at a club like Napoli and a good backup/rotation player for Juve. I really like the guy.
Douglas Augusto:
This video is from when he was 17. 2 years later, he is an undisputed starter at the club. Ball playing LCM, very skilled, good vision, great left foot for passing or shooting, is also mobile and strong and tough as nails. Defends and tackles very well.
Biggest problem is his mentality. He's a shy kid and very conservative on his moves. If he gets more confident, carrying the ball towards attack and projecting more often, this kid can become a top flight player in a few years. Would be a great investment and shouldnt cost more than 5/6M, since he's virtually unknown to Europe yet.
But next year, after the South American U20, his price will fly.
