Italy Coach Marcello Lippi has six spaces up for grabs in his 22-man squad for next summer's World Cup, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
What's perhaps even more remarkable is the fact 10 members of the 2006 World Cup winning squad look set to fly to South Africa.
Four years ago, Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta was introduced at the last minute. He would ultimately prove crucial in the production of a winning tactic.
The question is, who can be the new Perrotta this time in South Africa? The smart money appears to be on Antonio Candreva, the Livorno playmaker who made his full international debut against Holland on Saturday.
La Gazzetta dello Sport understands that the area of the squad most vulnerable to change is the defence.
Gianluca Zambrotta,Fabio Grosso and his back up Domenico Criscito are rumoured to be the only players certain of a spot along the flanks of Italy's rearguard.
Therefore, a debate is raging on the respective merits of Italy's other right-backs from Davide Santon and Christian Maggio to Matteo Cassani and Marco Motta.
At centre-back, Lippi is still unsure of the two players who could feasibly offer an alternative to Fabio Cannavaro and Giorgio Chiellini, although Salvatore Bocchetti and Alessandro Gamberini seem to be at the front of the queue.
The central midfield is apparently not up for discussion, but the players who could possibly take up wide positions in the Italy XI are causing Lippi a real headache.
Remember Italy's midfield is a very narrow three-man platform from which any width has come from Mauro Camoranesi and Claudio Marchisio.
If both are fit in June, then they will be Lippi's first choice. Otherwise he will take a punt on the likes of Marco Marchionni, Simone Pepe, Gaetano D'Agostino, Riccardo Montolivo, Angelo Palombo and Davide Biondini.
Attack is the most contentious area of the squad, as, after Gilardino and Iaquinta, there are seven names for just two places.
Giampaolo Pazzini feels he is more deserving than Amauri by birthright, while the public ideally would like to see Antonio Cassano give a chance.
Other names in the hat include those of Fabio Quagliarella, Ale Del Piero, Luca Toni and Raffaelle Palladino.
