He was an ok LB and was young when he played there, 3 years passed over that time, and I am sure he is the better player and will be even better the next years.

Chiellini's ball control is average at best.
Chiellini is clumsy with the ball in his feet.
Chiellini's first touch is below average.
Chiellini can't dribble or take on defenders.
Chiellini's crossing is nothing special.

How is Chiellini a great LB is beyond me.

What if we can't buy a world class fullback, and we have a chance to buy a super CB. Wouldn't you jump on the deal and let this CB partner canna and switch chiellini to LB? It's not like we are doing excellent at defense at the current moment. I would definitely would

You are saying "If". It's not like we tried it and it failed miserably. If ciro tried it and our defense looked worse than now, I would be the first to admit I was 100% wrong for suggesting such thing. We won't be able to tell until we see it in action. Legro and Canna is not a good partnership, maybe next season if we have Kjaer or Ranocchia to partner Canna. I agree that Chiello would be great defensively on the left but the risk to our central defense is just to great

He played once or twice as LB in Italy u-21.. and he is done quite decent there, not exceptional.. He can be our emergency LB when we need to subs Grosso.

Current? Currently we play 1 striker. I cant believe what i am reading here. If we would play 4-4-2 then Diego would be very wide, but his in the middle of the pitch.

You need to see the the formation in the heat of the moment. If you told me 3 years ago that chiellini would be a great CB, I would have thought it's mad idea. None of us would have ever dreamed that chiellini would be one day that good of a CB. You need to try it in a match, otherwise Tiago looked perfect in training last season according to many players but failed to impress in many occasions

Yes. My point being that if we don't make adjustments and try out new tactics, we risk the death-by-4-4-2 approach that this club has made famous in recent years where teams knew every match who was playing where and what formation we were coming at them with.

The fact that we are not doing it this season is evidence that different tactics can sometimes provide different learnings about what works with the team and what doesn't. If you don't even try them, you learn nothing and are left with the same exposed weaknesses and the predictable strengths -- often giving your opponents one less thing to think about.
